The BGO version is supposedly what MCA had as masters, but duplicated as 2-on-1, both the 1st and 2nd Lps paired as one cd. Yumm!
I've got both -mfsl udII and mca (canadian). MCA is a decent enough bargain, same tape as Mofi but maybe done on non-tube deck during Steve's wage slave days. In other words MCA sounds like Mofi dubbed down, less bass. At the end of "Berry Rides Again" on the Mofi you can hear a bit of speech in reaction to the take that is all but lost on the MCA.
Bob, Or perhaps Steve didn't use the old smiley face eq. that MoFi did ie. no bass eq. boost Curiously, are you sure that it's Steve's version? What's the number on the spine?
I'm away from the disc right now, but the cat # is MCBBD31020. Got it from absound.ca, $4.07us. Could be different mastering from US but I think it's as you suggested i.e. more truly flat than MOFI.
Bob, Very interesting. Sounds like the right number just different letters. I guess that's the difference between our countrys. I find that after listening a while at loud volumes the MFSL's tend to irritate my ears after a while, whule Steve's version never gives me audio fatigue.
Well (Michael) I finally got the US. MCA version and the results are as follows. The MCA has a bit more noticeable tape hiss but does sound remarkably similar to the MFSL. The MFSL has a more liquidy sound (tube sound?) to it especially in the bass dept which I kind of prefer. This is by far the toughest comparison between Steve and whomever that I've ever heard as they both sound really, really close and are both really good. Somehow the MFSL captures John Kay's vocals a touch better and the staging of the intruments is a very tiny bit better. (IMHO) you can't go wrong with either version but my preference is (sorry Steve) the MFSL.
