Steve Kilbey: Solo Albums & Side Projects Discussion

Discussion in 'Music Corner' started by InStepWithTheStars, Mar 15, 2020.

  1. Have you ever noticed how Kilbey always adds a line or two
    that truly sticks out?
This is just one example: #1.

    Keeper

"Waitress with the short hair is stoned
    She drifts amongst the tables
    Old ladies talk like birds
That'd fly if they were able

The coffee has a calming effect
    I'm nervous when I travel
    Red lights and steel worms
    Let the journey unravel."

Kilbey has a way to twist words around in a way that doesn't end up being cliche. "Anchorage" is Exhibit A. "The words of a mute, the passion of a rock", "conscience of a fox, love about the size of a shoe box", the way each chorus lead-in twists the focus on ice. Brilliant.

  3. I would love it, if S.K. would go electronic again!

  4. Love this song so much: "Double Exposure" off Narcosis + More.

  5. By the way, compare the bass guitar of this song (at 2:18) to the bass guitar
of The Church's "Lost My Touch" (at 3:06).
    Sounds familiar/similar?
    I love these little details!
The Church is the gift that keeps on giving in terms of the band, the solo and the side projects.

  8. Too bad that this thread is basically "dead in the water".

    Keeper.
    She's a keeper.
    Sleeper.
    You should keep her.

The wine seems to have sobered me up.
    I'm hardly shaking.
I'm gonna lose myself this time.
    And time that it's taking...!

Great song and one of my favorites on what is probably my favorite solo album.

Loving this song lately. Steve claimed he thought this was the best album he has ever been involved in. I don't agree in the slightest, but it's really great. This song sounds like it would have fit perfectly on Further Deeper.

The thread isn't dead - it's just that most of the discussion ended up in the Church thread!

I'm with SK on this one.

The Speed Of The Stars album is my favourite set of songs from his entire career (although, there are probably around 5 albums in second place!).

I need to check that one out!

  17. Steve's favorite album (that he has ever been involved in) tends to vary on any given day.
I've seen him mention these as he's personal favorites: Priest=Aura, Isidore, Untitled #23, Speed Of The Stars.

Another Steve Kilbey (and The Winged Heels) release forthcoming, ‘The Hall of Counterfeits’.

Prolific is not a word that does this man justice.

I tried to link to the Instagram post about this, but doesn’t seem to work, but you can find it if you have a look.

All I can say about collecting solo Kilbey is that you need to start setting aside $15 or so a month. He's releasing about three albums a year, and ever since That™ happened last year, postage has gone through the roof. That's an average of $120 per year on new albums. But when you look at second-hand prices on those albums, it's a steal. And the money goes directly to the artist instead of some lowlife.

I only really became a fan of solo SK at the end of 2018, which means I missed out on albums like Garage Sutra, AddendaOne, AddendaTwo, The Idyllist, Live At The Fly By Night Club, Miscellanaea: Whispers In The Static, and Speed Of The Stars - all of which are extremely rare and command prices between $40 and $100. (I've never seen Fly By Night or Miscellanaea for sale, and the others were from sellers who wouldn't ship to the US, thanks to Discogs's horrible new shipping policy.) I'm going to break the bank buying those when/if they come up for sale. The same thing is happening to his new albums - some bozo was asking $50 for Eleven Women on eBay the last time I checked. For ten dollars less, you can buy an autographed copy directly from Steve! (Speaking of which, he still has copies of both Kilbey/Koch albums, Eleven Women, AND Jupiter 13 - $20 apiece plus $20 US for shipping, if anyone is missing them.)

  21. Jupiter 13 is now up on Amazon.uk!

Thanks for posting that, £13 plus reasonable shipping cost is not bad. The same seller also has Eleven Woman for £14.

Interestingly the seller is in Australia and the delivery times are estimated about 3 weeks. The shipping seems very cheap to be coming from Oz so I’m trying to work out if there is a catch as very tempted to get both for that price.

  23. Don't think that there's a catch. I've pretty much always ordered my The Church and Steve Kilbey-related releases via Amazon.uk,
and I have always been satisfied.
At worst, it may take more than 3 weeks for your order to arrive, but I think it's worth it considering the fairly cheap price.

I've ordered everything directly from Steve using his PayPal and there was only one time it took more than a week for the package to get from his home in New South Wales, Australia to my mailbox in North Carolina, USA. And this was during the height of the pandemic, last summer/fall.

Don't use the store page on The Time Being website as that hasn't been updated in years. On the Instagram account Steve Kilbey Rock Art Merch it has a link to his PayPal and you can go directly through there. I'm not sure if he has a full list of what's available but I can get one if you want.
