In Ulm, around Ulm, all around Ulm. Agreed, so it appears that Steve's mastering can be found on the following pressings: MCAD-37214-DIDX-55, JVC, Made In Japan MCAD-37214-DIDX-55, CBS-Sony, Made In Japan CRC DIDY-55 MCD 01745 BMG Ariola MCLD 19145, Made In England EAC peak levels: 90.8 --- 91.7 --- 90.6 --- 88.7 --- 96.3 --- 86.2 --- 97.6
Are you kidding me? It's over?!?!?! The great mystery, that was Steve's Aja, has been solved? What I am I do with all my time now?
"In Ulm, around Ulm, and round Ulm around" or something like that. Both "um" and "herum" mean "around" in English. It doesn't mean aynthing really. It is a "tongue breaker". Does the beer stein show the Münster? And am I correct that it is made of glass and not clay?
Ah, a "tongue twister". Thanks. It is made out of clay, hand painted and shows the Munster, yes. Beautiful stein and a beautiful city. BACK TO THE THREAD, sorry.
OMG... I am utterly spent... and throbbing... after the long-awaited climax of this thread. ...a long time coming, indeed!
I compared the 10 second clip to the mastering on my box set version. The main thing I noticed was a slightly fuller-rounder/less-trebly sound to the snare in the SH version. Am I missing other details? In what part of the CD is the difference in mastering most noticeable? Maybe someone could post a good clip. I'm trying to train my ears here.
And what's amazing is that there are only 5,000 copies total among all those pressings! Just kidding!
By the way, one more to add to the Hoffman-mastering list is an early Japanese release with catalog number 32XD-112. I have this disc, and it is identical to my Japnaese CBS/Sony and JVC pressings with catalog number MCAD-37214.
So now that we've clarified that more CD pressings have _THE_ mastering, where can one go about finding a copy? Also, for Steve's Katy Lied, I'd be appreciative if there is an easy way to get it. Sorry to divert the thread!
Ah, but that maybe that will be revealed over here: http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=60983
Any determination on my USA DADC DIDX-55 non CRC version? Sorry, don't have time to cruise the whole thread. Thanks for the
Is this Steve's cd or is it the 1999 remastered? STEELY DAN - AJA - (1984) - NEW SEALED CD Hello and Welcome ! We are offering : Brand New / Factory Sealed CD ! 100% Original ! I'm not ready to give up. It can't be this easy. The real Steve-mastered disc must still be out there. Hiding somewhere. Somewhere in a long forgotten used bin. Just. Waiting. To be identified. What about the nasal-sounding problem Steve spoke of, the hole not filled in (all right, keep it clean)? Is this the official vindication of post #74? Will I be forever cursed with my copy of Beatles "1"? Was Steve simply obeying the Prime Directive in this thread? This has been a great thread. I've enjoyed it immensely. Sort of like a combination of Monty Python, Don Quixote, and It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. The true believers have now been identified by their steadfast assertion that their pressings were Steve's. I'm afraid I wavered. I started hearing the nasal vocals and I'm still hearing them and I can't stop. Of course, I've always liked the drums. I've even just now purchased the English pressing identified by Mal even though I have the Japan CSR pressing x 2 (and the pressing identified in post #192). Oh, the tragedy of it all. And, of course, I think it's post #242 that gives the moral of the story. So, in conclusion, over the years a secret government research program has caused the initial 5,000 CDs to be increased by a factor of 100. Silently. While no one was looking. IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT! AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How do you tell if your MCAD 37214 DIDX 55 Made in Japan copy is a JVC one or a Columbia Sony one. I see no reference either way on my copy. The clear plastic ring does NOT say CSR.
This was post #32 in this thread. And he speaks about the very same mastering that is now apparently Steve's mastering. There is still something wrong. Does the Roger Nichols mastering (the one with the "hole" in the midrange) even exist?
Mine isn't Steve's, definitely Nichols. I wanted to see if anyone thought different. FWIW mine has CSR repeating 3 times in the clear plastic center.
