Yes! I have the 2 CD on Subliminal Sounds sourced "From the original master tapes". The liner notes say:

"This record is released with support from the Swedish National Council For Cultural Affairs".

Sort of like the US Gvt funding the release of White Light White Heat:D

I sometimes would think, what would heavy psych sound like pre-synth, you know, if they had to use horns for the drone.

I guess Smithsonian Folkways has recorded some cool stuff with tax funding.

Stoner rock / metal is actually a genre of music. it doesn't mean "music that sounds good while you're smoking weed".

Stoner rock/metal - Sabbath, Trouble, Saint Vitus, Sleep, Tumbleweed, Kyuss etc. stylistically the bands are very similar. downtuned riffs, slow doomy riffs (this groove that was first established on Sabbath's Master Of Reality) and a hazy 70's production. warm analog tones. yes there's variation to that, but a complete deviation from that style means it isn't stoner rock/metal anymore.

the OP's made it pretty clear he's talking about this genre of music.

yeah yeah - I'm aware of their dim, distant past (Organization etc), but fallbreaks mentioned "Trans Europe Express". are you saying that this album falls under the banner of stoner/psych rock/metal?

Did I miss Dozer in this thread? Really?
Although I consider Sabbath's first two (or, even 4) records to be mandatory, I don't classify them as stonerrock. When I hear that term (and, I hear it a lot, since it's pretty much all I listen to, heh) I think it started in the early 90's with bands like Kyuss and Monster Magnet, although it wasn't called stoner at the time.
To list the essential albums of this genre would hurt my head too much. But, props to Godshifter for naming Thumlock.
It's hard to go wrong with Swedish stonerrock... Truckfighters, Greenleaf, Dozer, Graveyard, Half Man, Lowrider, etc.

    The thread title:
"Stoner thread, essetial albums of a Stoner/Psychedelic rock/metal collection."
is clear. "/" is a break not a connector.
It's not 'Stoner Psych Rock Metal'.
It's 'Stoner', 'Psych Rock', & 'Metal' for Stoners.

Amazing album...track down the original vinyl if you don't have already.

The follow-up was quite good as well: Sunrise on the Sufferbus. The original lineup split, with the drummer and lead guitarist leaving — and no less than Ginger Baker stepped in to sit behind the kit. Great lineup.

    image.jpg

The former drummer and guitarist formed their own band — The Bogeyman — which is also worth seeking.

Stoner rock/ metal is my favorite genre of music, because in some regard it takes me back to the days when I listened to Nazareth, Judas Priest, Kiss, etc..the heavy riffs, the analog sounding recordings..all the stuff that made the 70's rock scene amazing
So with that being said, here is my top 10 of Stoner Rock titles

    1) Spiritual Beggars: Another Way To Shine
    2) Fu Manchu: Action is Go
    3) Firebird: Grand Union
    4) Wo Fat: Psychedelonaut
    5) Supershine: Supershine (Dug Pinnick and the guitarist from Trouble..kick ass record)
    6) Harms Way: Oxytocin
    7) Clutch: The Elephant Riders
    8) Mahogany Rush: Strange Universe
    9) Dali's Llama: Full ON Dunes
    10) Electric Magma: Coconut Bangers Ball

    Great thread!! Thanks for starting!!
