First it was HP with The Kinks' "Picture Book". Then today I just heard the Stones' "Complicated" on a Lexmark Printer TV commercial. Very cool!
Let's not forget The Sonics' "Have Love, Will Travel" in those Land Rover spots. Hopefully some of the actual artists are making some money off of these, not just some record label executive who wants a plasma TV.
Which is exactly what happened a few years ago when The Smithereens' "Blood And Roses" was used in a Nissan commercial. Nissan leased the original recording from Capitol Records, who own it outright. Apart from some songwriter royalties, the band got nothing out of it.
I hope these ad agencies have to pay a zillion dollars for using the beloved music of my youth and adulthood to hawk their damn widgets.
I just cringe when I hear Jefferson Airplane's "Volunteers" being used in an E-Trade ad. One generation got sold. Up against the wall, stockbrokers!
