    Now there's a controversial topic...

It's just that I couldn't find another thread to put this into: I like the way Paul Desmond played the sax.

I was driving around one night and there was a radio program and it said Desmond wanted to sound like a dry martini.

I think he did have kind of that dry sound. I really liked his sound. It was uniquely his. I just like to listen to Desmond play.

So this thread is about stuff people really like in music.

To me, music brings life. I don't understand how some people can be perfectly happy going through life without it. Yeah, I guess it's the same when a LOT of people don't understand how I can be totally disinterested in sports and live my life without it in any way. Come into my home and you won't see so much as a hint of sports anywhere! But music, it's all around! You can't escape it.

Well add a 3rd agreement to a no-sports home. I have CDs all over the place though. In 5 different rooms...and not just a couple...hundreds (actually thousands)! Bookshelves full of music books, guides, sheet music, etc. And then there's the guitars, drums, amps, piano, etc.

As to the topic...I too enjoy listening to Desmond. Give me a couple of hours, a couple of drinks and put on the Desmond/Hall Mosaic set and I'm in heaven. What a tone!

I feel the same way about a lot of other musicians as well. David Gilmour, Clapton, Ellington, Mingus and many more. :)

Sports??? Who needs sports? The Sacramento Kings NBA Basketball team might end up the number one team in the Western Conference... BFD! I'm just glad we built the Arena so we can get in some decent concerts! ;)

Is there a lack of testosterone in this thread or what!

Admittedly there is no sports memrobelia in my home either, just guitars, cd's, audio equipment, mics etc. but hockey is on my TV all winter. And to watch Evander Holyfield beat the crap out of Mike Tyson was well worth the watch.

BTW Did I mention that this year the Stanley cup is coming home where it belongs?;) :D

    All,

I love music, like all of us, with a deep passion, but I am also as passionate about College and Pro football, NCAA March Madness, fine Red wine, aged USDA Prime Steaks, contemporary art, a perfectly mixed ice cold Martini, the beach in Naples, Florida and my beautiful, tall girlfriend of eight years, Kim.

Music is a part of the overall landscape of "living", lest we never forget that!

    Bob :D

During Stupid Bowl and the NCAA Jaggoffs I hear it all the time! People wonder what my problem is.

I recall one older guy who was a die-hard Green Bay Packer fan who questioned my patriotism. The next year he questioned my manhood! One guy tried to make me "admit" that I really wanted a TV set at my work so I could watch the Stupid Bowl. He got very angry when I wouldn't! I also love it when total strangers walk up to me out of the blue and give me updates to college basketball game scores. I love to watch them get all flustered when I repeatedly have to tell them I don't know what they are talking about (and I don't!).

When I was a teenager I used to think I would have a great time dating during football season but it turns out that some women are even more rabid about football than a lot of guys I know. But, I think most get that way because they either live or grew up in a male-dominated houshold where everyone is into sports.

    What he said.

I love college basketball. SEC, ACC, NCAA tourny. My second favorite team is whoever Duke is playing. :D

I also enjoy the NBA playoffs. Sacto is a BFD, cause I'd love to see anyone dethrone the Lakers.

I also like boxing, though I haven't seen one of the overpriced PPVs since Lewis/Tua.

Oh yeah, beer is good, too.

    Grant,

I know how passionate you are about music, recording and collecting music. Certainly, I respect your knowledge and enjoy our exchanges. What else are you passionate about? Share with us, your larger landscape!

    Bob :)

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

My landscape is littered with music! I live and breathe it! Ever since I was a baby it's been a major obsession. My wife understands this but my parents don't. Oh, I liked baseball when I was a kid, and I like to watch car racing, and I like to read, but it's been a long time since i've sat down to write anything. Let's see...I like to watch a good movie, and I have tons of them, but nothing gives me more joy than music! I also play drums.

When I grew up there was music on almost all the time. Half of us sing and half of us can play musical instruments. My dad, brother, and two cousins played football. My first cousin is a famous basketball vet. No, i'm not dropping names, either! You can figure it out. But I have no interest.

I also have an interest in the medical field and world history.

But it's still music at the end of the day.

BTW, my sincerest apologies to everyone. My now changed slur was not intended to be insulting to anyone. At the moment I wrote it I didn't realize I was being insulting.

    Now, back to the topic?

    The Larger Landscape

    Grant,

Thanks for sharing more about "you". I, now, have a better understanding of your passion for music. I believe that when "we" get to know each better as people we have a greater appreciation for the person behind the "threads" and "postings"!

For instance, I grew up in a "broadcast home" where my father brought home promo 45s from the Radio Station during the early to late 60's. As such, I usually was the first Kid to have latest Top 40 releases in those cool promos with the white labels, colored vinyl, etc. That experience inspired my collecting records and interest in reel recorders. I bought my first reel recorder when I was 15 from money I had saved from a paper route. Later, while attending college, I worked as a weekend DJ on a local Top 40 outlet and I hosted a Sunday evening "all request oldies" show on the campus radio station. Often, I played records from own collection. Hence, my "singles" orientation.

    Re: The Larger Landscape

Bob, I agree that we would also get along better if we all had an insight to each other's backgrounds, but no everyone cares to invite others.
I always wanted to be a DJ and play what I felt was great music. But since the mid 80s I lost that dream, especially in light of the state of radio as pointed out in that other thread. Radio isn't what it once was.

I always wanted a good reel to reel deck just for fun. My dad had one when I was a kid back in the mid-60s. A former friend had a nice Pioneer deck that used the large professional hubs back in 1983 that he wanted to sell me, but I declined because I think it was stolen goods. If it weren't for DAT and CD-R I would have gotten one by now.

    Dream of being a DJ

    Grant,

Those "non educational,community-based stations" (non-profit, listener supported) are always looking for well informed collectors to host thematic radio programs. For intance, here in Milwaukee, there is guy who is a postal worker who hosts an Oldies show. There is another guy who is a Milwaukee Police Officer that hosts a R & B and
Soul show. I love listening to their programs because they play such great stuff from their personal collections!

Maybe a fun idea for you!

    Bob :)

I just loved the way Ella phrased her signing. Say what you will about any other aspects of her singing, and not that I am because I love it all, but her phrasing is just stunning. I often imagine she could have sung the tax code and I would have been enthralled. Your mileage of course may vary.

Re: Dream of being a DJ

I live in a small town in So, Arizona that really has no public access station for radio. And, anything that ever came close has virtually nothing but Christian and ultra-conservative programming.

My sister and I once pitched the idea for a two hour R&B/old school-based radio show to the local oldies station. The owner of the station was all for it since they had a two-hour time slot to kill from their Westwood One satelite feed, but the very day before she decided she would take a sabbatical and leave the duties to her advertizing director. Well, needless to say, she shot down the idea on the spot, citing that the playlist didn't have a broad enough of an appeal! Mind you, this town has a major military base with a lot of blacks and latinos! Then we came back and said we could do top 40 up to the late 70s but she said they only go up to 1973, as the satalite feed does. Then we pointed out that their Saturday night live show played obscure 60's R&B ballads, her response was that their listening audience was largely latino at that time slot.

The next week she got some terrible DJ to do a 70s show. THis guy was just into early 70s classic rock. No one listened to him and they kept him on for two years! The guy couldn't get names of songs or groups right, and he had trouble cueing up a CD player!

    A 70's Top 40 Show

    Grant,

I think you could do a great job with a 70's Top 40 show. You have a passion for the music of the decade in all forms and your knowledge of the decade, historically, and it's music is extensive! You have my encouragement!

Around here it's not worth it. All of but one the radio stations here are owned by ONE guy! (Isn't there a LAW against monopolies?) One plays top 40 80s, 90s, and contemporary music, one plays country, one is talk radio, and the other station I referred to is oldies. That is IT! Someone should notify the FCC about this!

There are too many issues now with internet radio, so, there you have it!
