The rights are currently with Kino Lorber in the States and Arrow Academy in the U.K. I have the Arrow release; no desire for an upgrade.
A few of his films are available on BD in the U.K. I have the following: Cure (Eureka-Masters of Cinema) Pulse (Arrow Video) Tokyo Sonata (Eureka-MoC) Journey to the Shore (Eureka-MoC) Creepy (Eureka-MoC) Before We Vanish (Arrow Video) Third Window Films also has a double-pack DVD of Eyes of the Spider/Serpent’s Path, but I don’t own that one. I love Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s work, and would be happy to own more of it on English-friendly BD, whatever the label.
Parallax View Night Moves The Right Stuff Saint Jack Party Girl Three Days of the Condor Straight Time
Paperhouse - 4 stars from Ebert, the director went on to prove it was no fluke and it is a definite art film before any other genre. Unavailable in the US. WTF!!!!!!! One Night Stand (1984) - Again, a director who proved himself later, this one has a definite POV and theme while giving us a relatable teen comedy. Outrage - It is an outrage that Ida Lupino's famous film about the aftermath of rape is unavailable on ANY digital media. Submission (Scandalo) - a fantastic film with a theme of domination in war and sex with amazing twists and cinematography by Storraro. Perfect for the label.
Armageddon-rectify the rip off non anamorphic $50.00 DVD ...which today is TOTALLY useless on WS TVs...adding insult to injury the present BD is NOT the Directors Cut which was only on the CC DVD...I like this movie and I purchased the CC DVD back then...AGAIN, which should have never been released in a non anamorphic format...
Graveyard of Honor (1975) Goyokin (1969) The Star of David Beautiful Girl Hunter (1979) Star 80 (1983) Hamburger Hill (1987)
David Cronenberg’s Crash will be released Dec 1 and I couldn’t be more excited. It’s absolutely wild and the cut will be the unrated overseas version
My suggestion are comps of music videos in true 1080p, which has been generally neglected on home video beyond a couple things like the Beatles. Either curated by music act, video director(7 of these were released on DVD about a dozen years ago and were originally with Criterion) or more loosely by genre/era connection. Some are youtube only right now and could look even better on disc. Even a blu-ray upgrade of the Beasties Criterion DVD set
"The Thin Man" collection (6 films) The "Topper" collection (3 films) Hayley Mills collection (non-Disney)
Has anyone seen the 4K UHD disc of Crash released by Arrow Films? It was nice that Criterion added this to their releases and used the 4K restoration, but of course they only do BluRay.
Brother From Another Planet by John Sayles. The dvd had a commentary track with only Sayles, so get Joe Morton for commentary and extras now while he is still 73 years young.
Right Stuff and Saint Jack for sure. Robert Aldrich's 'Vera Cruz' (1952?) was the first anti-Western, well ahead of its time. But aside from its revisionist ambitions (which I think are just naturally part of the story) its a great time at the movies.
Did Criterion ever say why they have not released a 4K UHD disc? Lots of their sources seem to be 4K, I see little reason not to offer it.
They see the writing on the wall. Physical media is slowly dying, streaming is the main delivery system now. And blu ray, for 99.9% of the public, is good enough.
