I recently ordered the Complete Animals due to the fact that it had unreleased tracks and the B-side of "It's My Life," "I'm Gonna Change the World." Allmusic Guide just raved about this baby.

When I got it and opened it up, I noticed...gasp...NR! Yes No-noise. So, I am trying to find a decent Animals comp.

I know Singles Plus has been recommended on a recent thread, but it covers more of their career than what I am looking for.

Does anybody have this one (see thread below) and can tell me how it sounds?

    Thanks,

    Brian

About three weeks ago, Forum member Jimmy mentioned this:

If you want a nice Eric Burdon and the Animals collection including San Franciscan Nights, Polydor 849 388-2 is a good one.
"The Best of Eric Burdon and the Animals 1966-1968"
Most real stereo with three mono cuts.
    Also mastered by Dennis Drake

:agree: Yep, I have this one. Got it at a local pawn shop for $5! Excellent sound. I'd definitely recommend it for the later stuff, as it doesn't contain edited versions. Hell, it even has the full length "Sky Pilot"!

My only Animals disc is the old ABKCO single-disc compilation. Is it considered a horror show like the ABKCO Stones discs? Do the Animals compilations recommended here surpass it?

Keith, the Single's Plus and "The Best of Eric Burdon and the Animals 1966-1968" kick the ABKCO's cd's ass. I wonder if ABKCO will SACD the GH package and maybe put a few more out. They've done Sam Cooke so anything's possible.

mud, thanks. I desperately want better-sounding versions of "House of the Rising Sun" and "We Gotta Get Out of This Place". They sound awful on the ABKCO disc. Unfortunately, I don't think there were any other options on CD when I bought it. :(

Keith, I know the feeling. I hopped on this cd when it first came out just to get some Animals on cd.

  9. Careful when purchasing The Singles Plus. You want the 1987 single disc version from EMI U.K. (CDP7466052) and not the more recent 2 CD version, put out by BR Music called The Singles +.

The EMI The Singles Plus is also availble on LP from Simply Vinyl.

The EMI disc is on the left.

Peculiar how they elongated the cover photo on the 2 CD set.

So true. I wonder if the record label did that for the two-disc release or if an Animals publicist did it back in the day. If it's the latter, it would be an early example of image consciousness in rock music since stretching the picture makes them appear thinner.

    Thanks Steve and everybody.

I did do a search on "Animals" before beginning this thread and I did read about some of the suggestions for compilations of this group that have been out a while.

I was wanting good mono masterings of their prime period (before they went psychadelic) with that b-side without the no-noise being added. I didn't know how that latest release I provided the link to stacked up.

Thanks miike about alerting me away from the BR Music CD. I now have a lot of avenues to pursue.

    Brian

If it means anything, I can also recommend this CD, having bought it at the beginning of the year. The usual Dennis Drake job, it seems (a good thing). Mastering sans unnecessary EQ and NO compression. And no tracks have been no-noised as far as I can tell. I think it would be out of character for Dennis anyway. I spoke to him not long ago, and was very glad to hear him speak of "dealing with history" and "keeping the integrity" of music.

In short, if ya need some sigh-co-delik muzik with a killer British blues belter out in front, this is for YOU!

The version I have - BR Music, Made In Holland - does not have the enlongated cover photo. It is in a clam-shell type of jewel case. Maybe it was released in a slim double CD case and to make the cover square instead of rectangle (clam-shell) they squished the picture.

Has this 2 CD set from BR Music been no-noised as well?

I've been tempted to pick this one up. What's wrong with it?

I was wondering that too. I've seen it used at a couple places and have been tempted to pick it up.

This disc that Steve kindly provided from an earlier thread doesn't have House of the Rising Sun or It's My Life. That's the period I am looking at.

I am leaning to the Singles Plus single disc (not the BR Music version). How is the booklet? Does it have liners and photos?

Another one out there is this one (see link)...any thoughts? Is it No-noised?

Singles Plus doesn't have any notes outside of track info, which is also pretty bare (writer credits, maybe chart positions). I'd go with this one for the Mickie Most produced material.

I'm not that big of a fan of that Drake mastered CD, in terms of the music. The four tracks earlier tracks are really good, though. You should probably make a CD-R comp of those four tracks plus the 20 from Singles Plus. It would be a perfect Animals CD.
