According to The Digital Bits, film restoration specialist Robert A. Harris was involved in the video transfer for the upcoming Superbit Edition of "Lawrence Of Arabia". Hopefully, this new release will put to rest any controversy regarding the previous DVD release from 2001 in terms of image quality.:goodie:

And it is. Along with 2001, one of the best examples of visual storytelling you will ever find. Unforgettable score by Maurice Jarre, too.

Very good news!! I have the 2 disc "canvas" release and I agree that they made it too beatiful in the desert rather than Lean's intention of a damn hot, uncomfortable place to hold a pig-roast...

Mr. Harris's involvement is certainly welcome. It was sad that on the previous 2-disc edition they not only refused to consult him on the transfer, but they omitted all reference to him by name in the supplements as well. Perhaps more obvious than the color timing issues from the previous DVDs (which were subtle by most viewer's standards) were some of the errors in the soundtrack introduced by the remix. This included a really poor edit of the music cue when Lawrence begins walking atop the train early in the second act. The cue starts at the wrong time. They actually sat editor Anne Coates down for an interview for one of the supplements, but they obviously did not bother to consult her on the remix. Well, here's hoping that they nail it this time.

Getting the picture improved is all very well - I just hope they use the original soundtrack this time .

That would be great, but I'd settle for them getting the music cues right. Granted, I don't know the original film well enough to identify which cues they got wrong in the current DVD, but just knowing they're there is enough to bug me.

If you have the 2-disc limited edition, you can actually hear how the cues should sound by switching to one of the foreign language mono tracks. The French and English pro-logic and 5.1 tracks are remixes, but not the other languages in mono.
