The full length Live in Paris concert is now available as a 2CD+DVD digi-pack set.

According to Superdeluxeedition.com the CDs use the Peter Henderson and Russell Pope stereo remixes first issued on the DVD/Blu-ray back in 2012. The DVD is the same as issued previously with bonus tracks and 5.1 surround mix.

I already own the Blu-ray and really like it, so if they didn't mess with the sound this may be worth picking up just to have the audio on CD. Has anyone listened to this set yet?

AFAIK the complete concert with the 2012 remix has previously not been released on CD.

Previous releases of Live in Paris (the original 80's CD and the 2002 remaster) were also 2 cd sets but with only 8 tracks per CD. The following songs were missing: Goodbye Stranger, Child Of Vision, Even In The Quietest Moments, Downstream, Give A Little Bit, Another Man’s Woman. The track-order was also different.

You're correct. The only thing close to this before was building a custom playlist of Paris plus cuts from the bonus live disc from the recent Breakfast in America re-release.

Sorry for the late response, but I can confirm that my 2012 Blu-Ray has the same UPC. Enjoy! :righton:

The CD set is the same as the DVD/BR from 2012?

  14. Sander

    Sander Senior Member Thread Starter

Yes, the audio on de 2-CD is taken from the 2012 DVD/BR. However, the track order of the DVD/BR differs from the CD. This is because five tracks for which the original footage has been lost are included on the DVD/BR as bonus tracks with newly created montage visuals. The DVD included in this reissue set appears to be exactly the same as the 2012 DVD/BR.

Anybody get the CD set yet?

I'm listening to the CD's right now. On first impression they sound good! Nice soundstage and bottom end. For a modern mastering there are plenty of dynamics, although the waveforms show some evidence of peak-limiting being applied.

I have just listened to both the CDs and the DVD. Am I imagining things...can the DVD sound better than the CDs?

  18. Sander

    Sander Senior Member Thread Starter

That was my impression as well when I compared the Blu-ray and the CD's. However, my Blu-Ray set-up is very modest (simple Philips player and TV-speakers), so I'm hesitant to draw any conclusions...

I would expect there to be a difference in video quality between the BR and the DVD. Could there be any sound difference as well?

FWIW, the BD has DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (which DVD does not support).

To someone listening to this with good old stereo, is there going to be a difference in the sound?

  22. Galley

It lossless vs. lossy, so the difference may be minimal.

The 2CDs are indeed from the same concert as the Bluray/DVD released in 2012 (-> December 1, 1979 at Pavillon de Paris) and the track order on the CDs is faithful to the actual concert (the film is NOT).
However the CDs were mastered loud and have clipping/limiting.
Some time ago (before this 2CD/DVD edition) I ripped the audio from the Bluray, re-arranged the track order to represent the concert, and burned 2 CDRs. My 2 CDRs (taken from the Bluray audio rip) are not clipped, so I will continue to listen to them.

BTW I did close comparison with the "Paris" double live album released in 1980 and 9 of the 16 tracks on "Paris"are from the same show (-> December 1), even if the mix is completely different: School, Ain't Nobody But Me, Bloody Well Right, You Started Laughing, Dreamer, Rudy, Fool's Overture, Two Of Us, Crime Of The Century. The 7 other tracks on "Paris" are from another date in Paris (November 29, 30 or December 2).

I also compared the tracks from the bonus CD of the 2010 Deluxe Edition of "Breakfast In America", and 7 tracks are from the December 1 show: The Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger, Another Man's Woman, Even In The Quietest Moments, Downstream, Give A Little Bit, Child Of Vision.

Here is a summary of all these Supertramp releases with live recordings from 1979:

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    SUPERTRAMP: Paris (1980 live album)

    4. Asylum
    5. Take The Long Way Home
    6. Fool's Overture *
    7. Two Of Us *
    8. Crime Of The Century *

The 9 tracks with (*) are from the 01Dec79 show at Pavillon de Paris (same show as "Live In Paris '79" Bluray but different mix).
The 7 other tracks are from another date at Pavillon de Paris (most probably 29Nov79).

The track with (***) is from the 11May79 show in Miami.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for this breakdown! I ripped the audio as well - but from the DVD - and despite being Dolby 2.0, it's certainly passable enough. Don't think I'll "upgrade" to a loud/clipped CD/DVD set.

How's the sound quality on the BIA-Deluxe live cuts?

So the mastering of the cd's is bad? :realmad:
The bluray sounded really good to my ears, why did they have to mess this up?
