Ah, Forbidden Island, my hometown tiki bar. I've been there many, many times. In fact, I may have been there for this very performance, but it all kinda blurs together after a while, if you catch my drift.
Any album by Jon & the Nightriders is a must for those newly initiated into surf music. This was their 1st:
Also Reel To Reel music is the successor of Real Gone music. [/QUOTE] Oh yes. It is my favorite era of The Ventures - known as their Fender years - their 1st 8 albums. The sound quality is excellent but probably taken from other previous CD releases.
Cool! I've heard of that rather famous tiki bar. Looking at the videos it looks like pretty nice, although I'm disappointed it's so far away, for some reason I thought it was near Pasadena, but no I was thinking of Alameda St. or Alhambra oh well if I'm ever in the Bay area! Anyways another local (Orange County) band are the Blackball Bandits. They also have a few albums out and use a theremin on some songs... I saw them open for Messer Chups (the last live music show I saw before covid) and I actually kind of liked them more, at least at that show. Here's a show they did in downtown Santa Ana from 2018
This album Here They Are! The Venturas is old but it has been recently reissued, in stereo! The Venturas were a bunch of Chicago teenagers who released this, their only album, in 1963. Obviously they've been listening to the Ventures, now you can listen to the Venturas play "Walk Don't Run". Unfortunately, I couldn't find it on youtube, google gets them mixed up...
Great Melbourne style-mongers, The BlueBottles are a contemporary fave of mine: Oceanside, by The Bluebottles
Now, you may get the impression that I really really dig surf. And that impression would be correct. I really got into the surf revival in the late 80s into the 90s. Which led me to classic surf. Which led me to early Beach Boys which led me to Pet Sounds and later Beach Boys. It was a fun journey. I could go on and on, but I'll close out with a few more more old school again. The Ghouls
