Sussudio: would've it been accepted if anyone but Phil Collins had sung it?

Cool is an illusion. If anybody says they are cool, they obviously aren't. If cool is about fashion, then it is a definition given to us by rich addicts manipulating marketing policy, so it therefor isn't cool. If cool is just one of those impressionistic things, then it is totally subjective, like best album or song ....
So cool is an illusion for teenagers to flail trying to attain

I think some people, and some artists, are genuinely cool, in a good sense of the word. But it all comes down to subjective definitions and opinions. It's a coined term to begin with, after all.

I like Phil Collins' music. Be it with Genesis, or solo, or when he "plays well with others".

Sadly, the Buggles' well known hit proved a fairly good premonition of what would occure in the 1980s.

any way you flip it, the guy was/is an amazing musician and pretty much influenced and changed the way drums were played and recorded from the early 80s to i guess late 90s.

Although "sussudio" appears to have been a made up word, Phil may have subconsciously been thinking of "susurrate", which means to make a soft sound such as a whisper or a murmur. "Say the word" appears several times in the song. It's supposed to be about a teenage crush. Perhaps like a typical chronically shy teenage boy, he was saying her name, but very softly, afraid that she would hear, yet hoping that she would hear.

Multi-talented ,hard working guy, he was all over the place.
Phil Collins was to music = Michael Caine was to film in the 80's - early 90's
That song got real tired for me real quick as it would if anyone else had done it.

In Phil's recent autobiography, Not Dead Yet, Phil mentions that Miles Davies told him he was a huge fan of the single Separate Lives.

The keyboard chords in the bridge are great. But, to be fair, Collins loves jazz and has played in jazz fusion bands. I don't think he had a problem with those. He just would have never come up with something like that on his own.

I can now guess where the inspiration for the "No Jacket Required" album title came from...

Agreed. Some were implying Peter Gabriel never went for commercial success the way Phil did but I believe he was totally going for it with So. For those that want to compare the two solo careers, Sledgehammer and Susudio both seemed designed for pop success - and good for both artists that they scored!
