They could do the BBC stuff in better quality without loosing face, using the wording 'from newly found tapes not previously available'

Is Rhamadam anywhere on these 4 new bluspec 2 mini sleeves releases? It was on the earlier Japan Madcap Laughs.

They aren't interested. It was proposed after Early Years fiasco. No one in the Floyd camp interested to properly research that stuff.

This is all true, and everytime I read this it makes my blood boil. Such a wasted opportunity. I'm still playing the boots...

I'm aware of what's on it.... my point is that it would surely be more rewarding for both listener and the Barrett estate to properly remix the solo albums in full (the original mixes are gash - deliberately so?), than to simply re-issue a compilation that I would assume never sold that well anyway. Re-issues of albums (or big boxsets) that have been remixed with bonus material is of way more interest to fans/press than a compilation album.

I even find the 1974 stuff to be charming. It would be great to hear it in the best quality.

It's actually the first Syd material I ever added to my collection. I mean, I had heard his solo albums and Floyd stuff before, but I downloaded the 74 session before actually buying any albums. If I'm not mistaken, I did later come across the bootleg LP, You Got It Now!, in a store at some point

There used to be a very interesting article online called something like "Untangling the Octopus" that went through all of the lyrical allusions in Syd's "Octopus."

That's correct. Apparently trashing a few thousand cheap CDs wasnt worth the expense to preserve their legacy in the best possible quality.

They'd have been better off calling that track "Seagulls" as it certainly wasn't "Seabirds"!

    >BBC tapes

I seem to remember this conversation from before, but does person X have the actual masters or was it taped off the radio?

    >Saucerful

So how much surviving Saucer stuff is Syd actually on? Do we have any real idea? How many fruitfull sessions were there between Aug and Jan (or when Syd was given the boot)?

Actual masters. Not off-air recordings. Mp3 copies from DAT cassette does circulate of Flaming, Scarecrow, Reaction In G, Set The Controls. And i'm talking of both 1967 sessions (including one from December).

    >Saucerful

Per Chris excellent datebase: Pink Floyd - Syd Barrett on Non-Originals

    August 7-8 1967
    Set the Controls
    Scream Thy Last Scream

    SOUND TECHNIQUES (rec John Wood)

-Reaction in G E68410 - excerpt from it can be heard here: Reaction In G 67 . Unreleased and it's a cryin' shame.
-In the Beechwoods E68410 - released officially

    SOUND TECHNIQUES (rec John Davies)
    September 4 1967
-Untitled E68411 - on bootlegs, called Sunshine

Full version runs for 5 minutes. Considered to be third single

    DE LANE LEA
    October 9-11 1967
    -Remember a Day E68413
    -Jugband Blues E68413
-Vegetable Man E68413 - plenty of fast and angry alternate takes here. Punk Floyd

    *E68412 may be a lost 1st stage 4T?

    October 12 1967
    -Remember a Day E68414 - LP version
    -Vegetable Man (re-make) E68414

    October 19 1967
-Jugband Blues (brass SI, Syd vs) E68415 - Syd version is major holy grail and totally unbooted.
-Jugband Blues (brass SI, NS vs) E68415 - LP version, Norman score

    October 20 1967
-John Latham E68416 - released on Early Years. Almost accidentally due to my friend writing PF back in 2010 and notifying about it's existence (Mason in Wire Magazine insisted that "they haven't recorded it, because it's not surfaced on bootlegs" )

    EMI (Studio 2, Ken Scott)
    October 23-24 1967
-Paint Box (version 1) - unbooted and very interesting
-Set the Controls (vibes SI) - erased
-Early Morning Henry - acetate recently surfaced, PF backing Billy Butler - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EpA9H-HsS0. Tape taken away by Norman Smith
    -Paint Box (re-make)

    October 26-27 1967
    -Paint Box (overdubs)
    -Apples & Oranges

    December 20 1967
-Scream thy Last Scream (sfx SI)

    January 11-12 1968
-Set the Controls (organ, vocal SI)
-Scream thy Last Scream (vocal SI)

There's a plenty of stuff recorded between January & May. All listed in Glenn Povey book "Complete Pink Floyd". Tons of attempts of Corporal Clegg (it was considered to be a single at one point..), recording sessions for See-Saw etc. Some interesting unheard instrumentals. It could provide interesting historic bridge between Syd and David line-ups. This Syd-led sessions for Saucerful is as interesting as Smile Sessions.

Why don't we can get serious box set with all this stuff in one place? Did anyone really thinks that vaults are empty and all we have left with is Delicate Sound Of Thunder reissue? They barely dived into archives for Early Years. Research was very lukewarm and shoddy. They did a great work with video stuff. But audio side of the box was rush job by all accounts. It could be seriously improved.

The irony is that they ended up having to repress ALL the BluRays because they were so cheap with the original production that the discs began to rot.

I remember a video showing the original 'Arnold Layne' promo film in the screen room. Containing a bit of alternate vocals, keys and guitar takes in the later half.
Not sure if it was (re)mixed in Atmos though.
