What is your favorite EW on CD/Sacd?

Probably the European SACD. I like the multichannel mixes there. Truth is, I don't think I've ever heard a bad version of ELECTRIC WARRIOR.

I'm a bit late to the party but... the 2003 SACD has a 24kHz cut-off on both the stereo layer and 5.1 remix, so yes, there was a digital PCM step at some point.

  5. I picked up the SHM-SACD when it got reissued last year. That's interesting to hear about the 2003 SACD, I probably wouldn't have guessed it's a PCM transfer.

Comparing the two, I prefer the mastering moves found on the 2003 multi-channel SACD. The tonality is definitely darker and smoother on the SHM-SACD. I could see how some would prefer its sound, though I felt the more muscular mastering on the 2003 SACD fit EW's music better. I am keeping both in my collection but imagine pulling out the 2003 SACD when push comes to shove.

I like this kind of comparison but - apart from sounding louder and a little harsher - if I compare my just-bought 2011 with the 2003 Reprise reissue (the one with the interview at the end - I wish I knew if this was a different mastering from the 2001!), the differences between the redbook and the SACD are minute. I would love to be able to hear more differences but, Lord knows, how you hear a difference between two SACD versions of the same album (albeit different mastering). I was running a Denon CD player and a Marants SACD player simultaneously.

I'm willing to accept that I just have an entry-level set-up and I may even have entry-level ears at 53, though.

    Not a silly question...
I've got both. I bought the 2011 SACD not knowing that I could only play it on a SACD player.

For Redbook you can't beat the Rhino flashback at $5 dollars it's amazing.

It's a 2012 reissue of the original Reprise. The sound is superb!
Darryl is the T.Rex expert. I would like his opinion. I think it is
great and as I said $5 bucks from Amazon.

IIRC, it's the same mastering as the 80s Reprise issue of EW.

After reading the comments on this thread I took the plunge and bought the EW SHM-SACD. Compared to the redbook CD I own, I am mightily impressed, great separation and clarity, my CD is bassy in comparison, I prefer the clearer sound of the SACD

Congrats. It's a nice item. To piggyback, has anyone compared this – the mastering – to the 2003 multichannel?

Curious about what makes this so special (mastering?) Is Flashback a series? I can't see 'flashback' anywhere on Discogs except in the description. The disc itself has colouring.

Thanks, but I’m not sure what the connection is to the 2012 Reprise (?). Same master as the 80s CD recommwnded by Steve?
