Hard call since they went though many phases of their genre. My start was Phaedra also and the atmospheric landscapes on that album were what drew me to that sound, and them. But already by the next album (Ricochet), sequencing was beginning to be introduced along with electric guitar over layering. I still liked this sound and was a big fan up to and including Underwater Sunlight. I also backtracked to Atem & Alpha Centauri.

Here is their discography for easy reference on this thread.

Also from here shortly discovered Klaus Schulze, who as actually on the very first T. Dream album.
    All very creative Germans !

I know I'm in the minority here but for me it's Stratosfear. It's the perfect blend of fine synths/sequencers with more traditional musical instruments. There's something about the mix of cold machines and warm instruments that takes this album to another level.

Their best 5 albums, all in a row, what a peak! Not necessarily in order, my fave is Ricochet, followed by Encore.

    For me is Zeit.
    A beautiful dark record!
Obviously if you are an ambient/experimental lover.

Atem, Zeit, Phaedra and Rubycon for me.

Can't make my mind up about the post-Rubycon stuff, as it just doesn't quite hit the mark for me, lacking that hypnotic, other-worldly quality I find in those 4. YMMV.

If I only had to choose one it would be Logos/live

Stratosfear as it was my first Tangerine dream album.

This was my first listen and I think it is considered classic TD. Then it was Ricochet, Poland and Tangram for me and a few later numbers. But hasn't their album catalogue now past the hundred mark?

The Virgin Years CD set is on my wishlist, so far I only know Zeit and Quichotte/Pergamon. Love the latter.

I just can’t choose one as it’s a toss-up between Rubycon and Tangram. Of course, they’ve recorded so much great music, but these two albums are standouts to my ears.

Their debut appears to be Electronic Meditation - Wikipedia which has an opening track called Genesis...

I will have to set some time aside to explore a lot more - just viewing the album discography and it's overwhelming en masse!

I was just on Youtube and went through the first four albums, listening to bits of all the tracks and I don't care for it at all! (My loss probably) and I'm thinking that with such a vast lifespan there is probably a phase of Tangerine Dream that will suit everybody as opposed to one size fits all.

I might like the Virgin years more. I see that in the Eastergate Years, there is Phaedra 2005 and I wonder how different it is from the original or is it simply a remastered copy?

Their Virgin albums are their best work, IMHO, although there were some good recordings on the Jive label like Le Parc, Poland, and Underwater Sunlight.

Might be re-stating but I think the way to do this is

Virgin Years -> then back to Pink Years -> forward to Blue Years -> Starting with optical race and on, proceed with caution, stops when it becomes too "Yanni" for you...

I just noticed there are two Virgin Years sets out there. Are they some kind of Part 1 and Part 2? I ask this because the era's years are overlapping in the titles.

This 2 set complete each other. The overlapping is stupid or I just don't understand it. Encore is in set 2 and should be in 1 changing places with cyclone. If I'm not mistaken this would put set 1 ending in 77 and set 2 starting in 78.
