    Friends,

I would like to thank everyone who is providing assistance to me as I conduct research for my taping project. :righton:

I have organized these next "possibles" lists by year into several catagories for each year:

Billboard Top 100 Hits (selections by year)
Additional Selections (selections not in the Top 100 for the year)
Want List (seeking a source for this hit)
Mono or Stereo Versions (please vote)

Please note: Versions listed are Mono unless otherwise indicated. Stereo versions listed in the subject lists other than the Stereo or Mono list are either the only version that I have in my collection or the only version presently available on CD (to the best of my knowledge).

Bob: Gale Storm's (bet that's not her real name!) version of "Dark Moon" is included on Dark Moon--The Best of (Varese Sarabande 5523).

Bonnie Guitar's version is on History of Dot Records Vol. 1, also a Varese release (5686).

I've got "So Rare" on Time-Life's Your Hit Parade 1957.

I'll be glad to give you a hand with these, if you'll settle for a CD-r!

    Jimbo

P.S. I thought the Rays track was on some volume of the import Golden Age of American Rock 'n Roll series, but I'm not 100% sure.

I'd recommend Guitar Boogie Shuffle by the Virtues for additional selections 1959, and I vote for the mono version of Come Softly to Me.

Hmmm? How about Jackie Wilson's "That's Why (I Love You So)" (1959). I prefer the mono version of "Lonely Teardrops", BTW.

I may have "It's Just a Matter of Time" by Brook Benton in stereo. I have the original Mercury LP with the big "Mercury Stereo" banner across the top; alas, it's in a big pile of stuff that I haven't played yet. Maybe someone else knows for sure whether the stereo LP version is actually in stereo! Of course, it could be a re-recording. Let me get a chance to play it and find out for sure....

Also, "Silhouettes" by the Rays is one of the first of the Cameo-Parkway items that Mr. Klein sits on as if they have no value. "Butterfly" by Charlie Gracie is in the same boat -- that WAS Cameo's first hit single.

"The End" by Earl Grant is on Time-Life's "Your Hit Parade: The Late 50s" and "The Heart of Rock and Roll 1958." There's also a "Best Of/Singin' and Swingin'" by Earl Grant (MCA 11838). It's mono in all places.

Did I miss it, or is "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" by Buddy Holly missing from the 1959 list? It's in stereo on SH's From The Original Master Tapes, complete with an interesting count-in ("one, two, two"). Also missing from the 1959 list is "Waterloo" by Stonewall Jackson.

Your two "Aaargh!" stereo items appear not to have been issued on CD in mono.

    Tim,

I was never aware that there was a Stereo mix of the original recording of It's Just A Matter of Time. Thought it was always, Mono only. Certainly, I am sadly aware of Silhouettes and Butterfly being caught up in the un-released Cameo-Parkway catalog. Thanks for the information on The End. I simply missed It Doesn't Matter Anymore. I have it, so thanks for reminding me and for your contributions Tim!

    They sometimes counted off a song "1, 2, 2" at Decca/Coral instead of "1, 2, 3".

    Can anyone guess why?

Nah. That would be 1-2-1 and then a pick-up note, never 1-2-2. :)

Perhaps they had Graham Chapman in character as King Arthur counting it off like he did for the holy hand grenade. I think that was 1-2-4, though.

    Sorry, I got sidetracked!

Jack Hansen and those bandleader dudes that worked for Decca/Coral/Brunswick, etc. labels always did the "one, two, two" count because Milt Gabler (Decca A&R genius) felt it was easier for the engineer to splice out the countdown if the last number was a "hard" sound rather than a soft "threeee". Much easier to cut the tape after a percussive "two" than a lingering "three".

Yup, that's the real reason. The late Milt Gabler told me so!
