The Blu Ray arrived and I love it! Definately prefer it to my original CD. Never heard the MFSL so I can’t say which I prefer (Blu Ray or MFSL), but for now, the Blu Ray is my go-to copy.
I'm still confused about this swapped channels thing! You guys said that the metal chimes on "Shout" should go from left to right, correct? Well, on the MFSL it goes from left to right, and on the Mercury – 824 300-2 WG CD from '85 it goes from right to left. This is the complete opposite of what you guys said! You said that the MFSL was wrong and the old WG Mercury was right.
Not sure if we know for certain what is actually correct. My US LP Right to Left My old US PDO CD Left To Right.
Alright, sorry guys, i probably read it wrong. The MFSL is the wrong one (right to left) and the '85 WG Mercury is the right one (left to right). Case closed.
Another question: every song from the MFSL CD has the wrong channel orientation? And if so, can i use a software like "Audacity" to just swap the channels? Is it that simple?
Can anyone tell me if the 2014 and the 2016 SHM-SACD's share the same mastering? I just recently purchased the Blu-Ray and agree with BIGGER Dave, the 5.1 surround sound is excellent. A fun listen!!
Hi Bobby. Thinking of picking up the SACD. How do you like it and it would be great if you could tell me what you compared it to. I currently have the MFSL. Thanks very much
It’s good, though I’d advise you to go for the Blu Ray Audio version. That way you get the original mix, the 2014 remix, and 5.1 versions. If you still want the SACD, I think there’s a thread on it here somewhere.
About the MFSL: coul you please tell me if only "Shout" has its channels swaped? Or it's the entire album?
I did some checking last night and confirmed that the all the tracks on the MFSL have the channels swapped compared to the original CD, including the bonus 12" versions. I also checked the following original singles and confirmed the channel orientation matches the MFSL CD on all of them: Shout: UK 12" (extended version and 7" version), UK 10" Everybody Wants to Rule the World: UK 12" (extended version and 7" version), UK 10", UK 7", US 7" Not that this helps prove anything!
On CD, the correct channel orientation can be found on the '85 "Mercury 824 300-2" and on the fisrt disc of the "30th Anniversary Edition" boxset.
Fellow Hoffmanites: please excuse my ignorance and/or naivete - but why is the swapped channel issue a problem? If the channels are not otherwise affected then... what?
For one, it's not the way the artist wanted it to sound. Also, try listening to some familiar songs with the channels correct and then swapped. You'll notice swapping the channels gives the songs a different feeling.
Absolutely! It is just that @jamesc and @c-eling make most of us look normal. I will give "Head Over Heels" and "The Working Hour" a comparison this weekend with a couple different versions.
