Out In The Country is an excellent choice I also like My Impersonal Life.

Out In The Country. But for sentimental reasons I’m partial to The Show Must Go On.

I pretty much like them all. But this one never fails to make me move.
And Cory's vocal has major character.

"Pieces Of April" is another favorite of mine, from a bit later in their career.

That one has emerged as a favorite of mine over the years too. The same album introduced me to Allen Toussaint's "Freedom for the Stallion," which they cover beautifully

From the album Naturally, I love Sunlight. Really liked the title track to It Ain't Easy. Several tracks from Harmony are on my list: Never Been to Spain, Murder in my Heart for the Judge and My Impersonal Life. Any of their big singles are awesome. Liar, Mama (Told Me Not to Come), Easy To Be Hard, Shambala. But if I had to only pick one song as per the title of this thread, it would probably be Pieces of April.

I played guitar in a Three Dog Night tribute band a few years back. I was familiar with all of their hits, and some of their deeper cuts from the first four albums I had when I was very young.
I had to really study these songs, and most of them are absolutely brilliant productions. Little subtleties, like slightly changing something in every verse, were a blast to dissect!
With all bands that I like, I never distill their output down to just one “greatest ever“. I don’t subscribe to that kind of hyperbole.
But I’ve always dug “One Man Band“. Jimmy Greenspoon’s Hammond organ intro is so fine! There’s only two-part vocal harmonies until the out choruses, and that fuzztone guitar is pretty gnarly!

I remember liking "One Man Band" when it came out in early 1971...seems like I totally forgot about it over the years. This thread is really bringing back the memories. Their version of "Sunlight" which I heard for the first time today, runs the Youngblood's version pretty close in quality.

Maybe you had to be alive in the '70s to fully appreciate this band, I don't know. But I think a Three Dog Night revival is long overdue. I offer this thread as evidence. What an amazing string of worthy top 40 hits they had, not to mention a sizeable list of sterling deep cuts.

Or maybe there's "no need in bringin' 'em back, cause they're never really gone."

I'd probably have to go with Eli's Comin', but they had at least ten other tracks that were just as good.

From 1st album, an excellent and tight rendition of Otis’ version. Cory Wells does remarkable justice to Otis.

This is my favorite as well, at least for the vocals. Really hot. I'm also partial to "Eli's Coming" because it has some great piano. Both good melodies.

That’s one of their last big hits, remember it well, the radio played it so much.

Yep. Their big run was 1968-1974, not so coincidentally around the time era The Brady Bunch and the Partridge Family were on. So odd that they all ended around the same time but there was a lot of change from 1974 to 1975…

Yes...I'd say "Easy To Be Hard" is my favorite cover song off of the "Hair" Broadway soundtrack. One of Chuck Negron's greatest vocal performances.
