Speaking or ears telling us something, listening to the Hey Bulldog guitar solo, is that Paul? It certainly sounds like a Paul solo.

I always figured that solo was George because it is a chordal solo. Paul tends to do single note solos while George tended to take a more chordal approach.

I cannot tell by watching the video, but I suspect Paul too. I also think he plays lead on 'Birthday' 'Helter Skelter' and a few others. :)

Geoff Emerick said in his book that it was George.

There was a lot of discussion about that solo awhile back. Many people feel it sounds like John. I don't think it ever got resolved. There are some clues in the video but nothing definitive.

To me, the solo isn't simple enough to be John. It's not wild enough to be Paul, and the fact that it sounds like it was a worked out solo rather than improvised leads me to george. It sounds like his tone and approach too.

I believe it is George, Paul's would be more random and not as pricise IMO!

;)How dare you talking this way about Paul?? As usual just trying to dismiss Mccartney;)

    ..just kidding..

Phil...fully agree with your and Lownote analysis; IMHO George plays here.
One of my fave Beatles tracks with one of my all time fave guitar solos:
Listened for the first time age 11 when my Dad bought a cassette tape of "Rock'n'roll music" wrapped in "Talent" logo..it sends a shiver down my spine everytime I hear it; always turn the volume up when the solo arrives..

I think it's John on the Hey Bulldog solo.
Listen to You Can't Do That
and the first solo on Long Tall Sally.
It's not too far removed from those rhythmic solos by him.
I think it's John on Too Much Monkey Business as well.

This is how the Beatles recorded the songs in terms of recording date,
arranged from the earliest to the latest.

    1. Strawberry Fields Forever
    2. When I’m Sixty-Four
    3. Penny Lane
    4. A Day In The Life
    5. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
    6. Good Morning Good Morning
    7. Fixing A Hole
    8. Only A Northern Song
    9. Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite
    10. Lovely Rita
    11. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
    12. Getting Better
    13. Within You Without You
    14. She’s Leaving Home
    15. With A Little Help From My Friends
    16. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (reprise)

  13. The 1999 "Hey Bulldog" music video of the recording session shows George playing the solo break, if memory serves me correctly...

    George does the solo IMHO.

    Nope!
That would certainly end the speculation.
Both George and John are seen holding electric guitars in the video---but neither is shown playing the solo.

There is a very tiny snippet with George sitting down doing a solo on his brown guitar, and his left hand is not strumming but plucking the strings so IMO he did the solo!

Well, we discussed this a while back. I always thought it was John (his somehow raw and rythmic style), but according to Ron/Brainwashed the basic tracks suggests that John is playing piano, Paul bass and George guitar. I seem to remember that Ron's analysis was rather convincing. Anybody not happy with this should look for the old "Bulldog"-thread, that chapter can be closed.

Also in the Hey Bulldog video it is obvious it is George playing the solo because of the way he is sat down playing, ie precise and concentrating, not standing up just rocking on Rhythm with Lennon and McCartney etc

John would never double track a solo. That´s George´s domain (Can´t Buy Me Love, She´s A Woman, I Feel Fine, Old Brown Shoe etc.). Definitely George.

Sure there was. But this solo manually double tracked. There are slight differences here and there in the double tracking.

Show the cap and close up of George playing?

  24. Here we go again with the "Hey Bulldog" solo debate...

I've seen the video many times - no conclusive proof who plays it.

Here's to me how the track breaks down:

    Basic track -

    Piano: John
    Bass: Paul
Electric guitar: George (playing the main riff in the intro and after the chorus, and the little fills during the verses)
    Drums: Ringo

    Overdubs -

Vocals: John & Paul together (as obvious from the video)
    Tambourine: Paul
    Drums overdub (doubled snare): Ringo
    Guitar solo: - JOHN!!!!

First of all, the solo doesn't sound double-tracked to me - it's one single performance. Next, the slapdash feel with the fast chorded strummed figures absolutely screams Lennon (as an earlier poster said, listen to "You Can't Do That", "Long Tall Sally"). George usually plays with way more precision, and I can't think of anything else he's played that's stylistically similar to the solo here.

Also what I want to know is why possibly the best new song in the film was cut from the USA version, incidently with a great animated scene and yet they still had 'All Together Now' featured twice ? ? ?

Why was it in the 1960's that when anything good (example Are You Experienced, Beatles Albums) hit the USA they had to 'butcher it' and make it worse, don't understand the business practice they had at that time?:(
