It may also be a matter of testing the waters, pardon the pun. Announce an exclusive gig and let social media do the heavy lifting before making an informed marketing decision.

  5. I loved to watch the DVD with just the music, and the optional subtitles (in the language of your choice.) It makes it more of a dreamy right-brain experience.
I was very upset when the Lord of the Rings DVDs couldn't be watched this way, with Howard Shore's soundtrack music.

The 1999 DVD is the only way I know to get the surround mixes without sound effects.

The Beatles' Yellow Submarine will return to movie theaters across North America this summer to mark its 50th anniversary.

The film is set to start screening July 8th, though a complete list of participating theaters has yet to be announced. Tickets and screening information will be available soon on the Yellow Submarinewebsite.

For the 50th anniversary screening, Yellow Submarine was restored in 4K digital resolution, though no automated software was used in order to preserve the original, hand-drawn artwork. Instead, the film's photochemical elements were restored by hand, frame-by-frame. The famous Yellow Submarine soundtrack and score were also remixed in 5.1 stereo surround sound at Abbey Road Studios by mix engineer Peter Cobbin.

George Dunning directed Yellow Submarine, partnering with writers Lee Minoff, Al Brodax, Jack Mendelsohn and Erich Segal, as well as an animation team led by Robert Balser and Jack Stokes. While the film featured the Beatles embarking on a psychedelic Pop-Art odyssey to save the undersea paradise of Pepperlandia, the band didn't actually voice themselves. Instead, a quartet of actors portrayed the Fab Four, and the Beatles only appeared via the soundtrack and in a live-action sequence that closed the film.

Last summer, the Beatles' Apple Corporation announced a partnership with Titan Comics to produce a comic book adaptation of Yellow Submarine. MAD Magazine editor Bill Morrison was tapped to helm the project, which is expected to arrive this year, though a release date has yet to be announced.

The Beatles’ ‘Yellow Submarine’ Set To Return To US Theaters For 50th Anniversary

The Beatles’ classic 1968 animated feature film, Yellow Submarine, is set to return to theaters across North America this July in celebration of its 50th anniversary. Abramorama, Apple Corps Ltd. and UMG have teamed to give Beatles fans of all ages the opportunity to come together and share in this visually stunning movie and soundtrack.

Yellow Submarine was restored in 4K digital resolution by Paul Rutan Jr. and his team of specialists at Triage Motion Picture Services and Eque Inc. The film’s songs and score were remixed in 5.1 stereo surround sound at UMG’s Abbey Road Studios by music mix engineer Peter Cobbin. Due to the delicate nature of the hand-drawn original artwork, no automated software was used in the digital clean-up of the film’s restored photochemical elements. This was all done by hand, frame by frame.

Unsure if this has been posted but I love the soundtrack .
Am sure it will get a Bluray release once it has done the cinema rounds. I will buy it for the 5:1 mix of the soundtrack but have no real interest in the film itself.

Is this 5.1 mix distinct from the ones on BR and DVD? If so, I wonder why Giles was not involved.

A new 5.1 mix? Seems odd to do a second one since one was already done the last time they recycled this movie. (And I heard good things about it, just don't care enough about the movie to have spent the money on it)

If they did the 1999 Songtrack as a 5.1 remix, independent of the movie, now that would be cool.

the Beatles in surround is so scattershot they really should get it together..
the mixes on the DVD are great but incomplete with edits and voiceover chatter. annoying as hell when they could have easily had a 'music only' type option so you could hear the song complete. ....but let's face it, the entire catalog needs a surround mix after the first 2.

Um... It had a DVD release in 1999. Then a DVD / Bluray release again in 2012.

    Do we need a re-re-release for 2018?

PS. I would love to see this in a theater again.

I'm sure this is the current restoration, which already has a Blu Ray release, being wheeled out for the anniversary. Stunning sound on the disc though.
