    Clemons
    Preston

I don't know that any of these are the best, but they're on my short list:
Hank Williams and his Drifting Cowboys
Muddy Waters and his 1950’s band (including Little Walter Jacobs, Jimmy Rogers, Elgin Edmonds, Otis Spann, Junior Wells, James Cotton, Pat Hare)
    John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers
Louis Jordan & his Tympany 5

Impossible for me to pick one

    Zappa and the Mothers
    Cave and the bad Seeds
Springsteen and the E street band
    Petty and the heartbreakers
    Prince and the Revolution

    And certainly more than that

Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - after the breakup of the original collective which included Horace silver, Hank Mobley, Doug Watkins, and Kenny Dorham, this was Art's band but he didn't compose much so there were always significant contributions from various members who did - like Wayne Shorter and Bobby Timmons.

Murph and the MagicTones for sure.

Disco Swing Party Live from the Holiday Inn Armada Room from 1980 is a classic, despite the candy-ass monkey suits.

I agree, The Band is the Band.

Honorable mention for any band playing behind Bob Dylan or Lucinda Williams over the last 20 years.
