Thanks for the news Bobby! Its turning out to be a great (but expensive) time for fans of late 60's and early 70's music especially for newer, younger fans like myself. We weren't around when these masterpieces were originally released and so it feels somewhat like going back in time.

Starting with the Beatles remasters last year, Exile on Main Street, the John Lennon remasters, the Apple Records remasters, Pauls McCartney reissue program, the All Things Must Pass 40th anniversary and now LAYLA!! Some of my all-time favourite albums getting remastered with deluxe treatments. Wish Olivia would've gone for an all deluxe edition of All Things Must Pass as well.....

Looking forward to hearing more details especially about the bonus material :)

Oddly enough this thread has been on my mind again recently. I may have to go through and read the entire thing again. Maybe make it a yearly ritual like making an odyssey to the heartland of the American dream or something. To travel through time back to the pinnacle of excellence for rock and roll music.

I have such a fascination for Duane Allman these days. He's one of those individuals who was so intriguing that I never tire of finding out all I can about him. I have recently been reading Jas Obrecht's blog where you can find interviews with a number of people who were close to Duane including his brother. I learned a great deal about him that I hadn't known previously all of which gave me greater insight into his character.

Duane was well aware that he gave Clapton a run for his money on the Layla album...

From the interview with Gregg Allman:

Although I disagree that it is difficult to tell who is playing what on "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad". Duane is all over that track playing all of those wicked leads at the beginning and all of the signature Duane Allman licks in the mellow second half of the song.

From the interview with Bob Greenlee:

I look forward to adding your book to the mix, Bobby!

LAYLA GETS A 40TH ANNIVERSARY RELEASE IN DIFFERENT FORMATS

Derek and The Dominos classic “Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs” will be getting a 40th Anniversary release in March 2011. Ok, so it is late by a few months, but who’s counting!

The set will be available in three formats:

    1 newly remastered CD
    2 2CD Deluxe Edition
    3 4CD/1DVD/2LP Super Deluxe Edition

Tracklists will be announced soon, but should include material from the Johnny Cash Show, the unreleased second Dominos album, live at the Fillmore tracks and much more. We understand that the main album will be mastered from the UK master tapes.

Bobby Whitlock’s long awaited autobiography is due to be published at the same time.

I wish they would offer the 4CD/1DVD super deluxe package without the LP's. Lot of fans don't have the equipment to play vinyls and so why make them pay for the LP's? Instead offer the 2-LP vinyl version separately so that more casual vinyl fans can also get it without having to pay the hefty super deluxe price. Clubbing the two formats together doesn't make a lot of sense.

Ok, I'll try not to rant about this anymore! :)

While we're on the subject, Bobby and his wonderful partner Coco were kind enough to send me a review copy of Bobby's memoirs. It is a very special read. In addition, Coco has a terrific new CD out, a tribute to Delaney Bramlett. There is one very special track that Bobby plays on, "Rest in Peace," and it will bring tears to your eyes and just blow you away. Here's the review I submitted to Sound Waves:

    CoCo Carmel
    “First Fruit”

There have been many wonderful tributes to the late, great, and somewhat underrated Delaney Bramlett, but none as warm, embracing and loving as this from the incredibly talented Coco Carmel, his ex-wife.

As Carmel explains in the liner notes, this marvelous record was recorded, under the tutelage of Bramlett, over the course of more than a decade, from 1988 to 2001. Upon repeated listening, it is clear that not only did Carmel learn her lessons well, but she has stupendous talent in her own regard.

Carmel and Bramlett wrote or co-wrote all of the tracks on the record, a few, most notably “I Don’t Know Why,” will be familiar to longtime Bramlett fans. Yet, this is clearly Carmel’s show, playing saxophone, bass and guitar, as well as offering her earnest, yet atmospheric, voice to the proceedings.

And, I absolute dare you to listen to “Rest in Peace,” the final track and a personal tribute to Bramlett, who died in 2008, without getting more than a bit misty eyed. Accompanied to her current partner, former Domino and Bramlett musician, the incomparable Bobby Whitlock on keyboards and slide guitar, Carmel offers the perfect epitaph to a stunning record.
As most fans know, Bramlett surrounded himself with many great musicians, among them Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Dave Mason, and Whitlock, among others. With this release, CoCo Carmel stands proudly on the pedestal with them.

I wonder if any part of the Johnny Cash show performance other than 'Its Too Late' and 'Matchbox' was filmed and still exists...that would be awesome! For the live at Fillmore tracks, its a good opportunity to include the now OOP versions from the original In Concert album. I wish I could go back and watch those Fillmore shows - those performances truly rock!

With this news, guess we've got ourselves the D&D trilogy this year. First, the expanded deluxe Delaney & Bonnie with Eric Clapton Deluxe box, then the news about the upcoming ATMP reissue and now the awesome Layla super deluxe edition! Who would've guessed that?

Looking forward to your book Bobby! :)

I don't know if it was filmed, but didn't they play "Got To Get Better In A Little While" to the studio audience for some reason?

That's my favorite version of that song...

    What was Bill's involvement?

I would *assume* everything was videotaped, but the complete (apparently) recording does circulate:

    It's Too Late
Got To Get Better In A Little While
    Matchbox
    Matchbox (jam)
    Matchbox
    Blues Power

Great news. I love the Layla box set and I would imagine some of the outtakes will remain exclusive to that set. I do hope we get some additional unreleased material issued. I too can live without the vinyl, but like with the upcoming Live At Leeds set, I guess I'll just look at it while I enjoy the rest of the package.

Bobby, any news on getting some of your early solo work back in print?

Maybe now after that earlier thread, people here can stop treating Delaney Bramlett's memory with such little respect, and stop acting like the man was the devil himself. It's sickening how people act like this man was nothing but evil, and even write off any of his solo work because of it, when many of their heroes (JOHN LENNON) made similar mistakes and behaved in a similar matter.

    Hey Bobby,

Were you involved in the production of the upcoming DVD? I'm wondering if they did a "Classic Album" style documentary about the making of Layla. That would be so cool! :)
