Was backstage before a gig once when Steve was cracking many jokes. Peter said, “People imagine that he’s quite dour, but this is what he’s really like.”
Steve talks about that speech/award show in autobiography and laments he wasn't like that more in the 80s and been more charming to journalists and industry types for the good of the band.
Thanks for posting that, as not on Facebook. Does sound like the physical album won’t be out in February, I wonder if they would be better delaying the entire release and getting the download/streaming out at the same time as the physical? I do feel that if people can stream it for a couple of months before the physical product, some folk may not bother buying it. Interesting as well that some of Steve’s solo and collaboration work is going to get a re-release as well, excellent.
Just checked out Easy Action’s website and the new album (plus other Steve stuff) is in the ‘coming soon’ section, says the UK/Europe release date is 21 April 2023, pre order from mid February. Coming Soon - Easy Action
I pulled Magician of the Spirits off the shelf today for the first time in ages. I particularly enjoyed the closing two songs (title track and After Image).
This is incredible news! It's great that The Church now has, based on this information, a label that is very committed to the group and is going to put so much effort into several releases!
Been having a Hologram Of Baal month. How epic is that transition from No Certainty into Tranquility? It's like the clouds parting.

I just picked up Isidore's Life Somewhere Else. Outstanding and dreamy as usual. Looking forward to what Cain will bring to The Church.
It's a great album released in 2021, credited to Steve Kilbey & The Winged Heels which apart from Steve also featured Gareth Koch, Barton Price and Roger Mason. Highly recommended album! Steve Kilbey & The Winged Heels - The Hall Of Counterfeits | Releases | Discogs
Steve Kilbey has made albums with Gareth Koch and several albums with Martin Kennedy. Now Gareth Koch and Martin Kennedy have released an album together, titled Music in the Afterlife, available digitally and on CD via Bandcamp: Music in the Afterlife | Gareth Koch & Martin Kennedy | gareth koch (bandcamp.com)
OK I listened to Bastard Universe again because of this thread, it rules. I downloaded some of the Baal tour shows from Shadow Cabi as well. The Church were on fire in 1998. Damn. Must have been an exciting era to be a fan. With A Box Of Birds following so quickly too. At the time I was 12 and listening to Puff Daddy and Marilyn Manson.
It was good. After not touring the U.S. for 8 years and bluffing us about splitting up, they came back strong and started coming around every year or two.
I need to check out those live shows from ‘98 - shame the band nixed an official release and did BoB instead. I would have preferred the better covers used as single b-sides.
This thread somehow disappeared off my watched threads list! Nice to see some rare stuff is getting re-released. Steve mentioned a box set of his obscenely rare 2012-2014 solo stuff coming soon, but I don't think "soon" meant "in more than two and a half years". (EDIT: After reading the PR, I've never heard of "Surge" before – that could be the name of it.) Easy Action is a pretty good label, I have a few Nikki Sudden releases from them. Did the album cover change? I don't recognize this new one at all, I remember the one with the statue.
The Church Concert Chronicle (1990-1999) Here's some of them available for download. The audio quality isn't always top, but the band sound great and energized. Setlists, posters and pics too.
It’s cold outside and this is hitting the spot…wish snow job got a reissue…these two crafted some great music
