Welcome and I concur about Myrrh. I also agree with you about the sparse production of Kilbey's early work. His more recent material (e.g Painkiller) sound much more like his parent band (in fact Powles plays on it). I urge you to pick up something from the band post-Heyday at some point and give them another try. There is something for me to like on every single Church album.

I can't disagree about Myrrh. It's got it all; arrangement, lyrics, tone. Kilbey's lyrics are untouchable. They paint such a perfect vibe, alongside the music. There couldn't ever possibly a better album-opener for Heyday than that.

One other tune that I hold in almost the same stratosphere-bursting regard as Myrrh is "Shadow Cabinet". So damned good.

(Louis; thanks for the Tranquility clip. I'm gonna take Hologram of Baal for my drive today!)

  5. I just find it difficult to believe in The Church without MWP. Yes, we still have two founding members but MWP has been there through every incarnation with Kilby.

I think it's what we're all struggling with right now. I'm going to try to approach the new album open-mindedly.

They still have Pete in the band. It'll be Churchy!

And at some point I believe Marty will be back.

Yeah, nice that they've seemingly left the door open for MWP. I hope it's soon.

Whatever's between them right now, it can't last forever. Those ties just run too deep.

  10. Same here. It'll be interesting to see how the songwriting/sound progressses.

We really should do the album by album thread. But I get exhausted just thinking about it.

Some Church lyrics that reference other Church tunes/albums:

Already Yesterday - "I start the car for Violet Town"
Why Don't You Love Me - "And all because of some stupid lyrics on 'The Blurred Crusade'"
Anna Miranda - "Wish I knew what you were looking for"

Well it will probably sound like The Refo:mation, which pretty much sounds like every Church album from the last 15 or so years, i.e. slow-spacey-wispy-not-very-approachable but with a pretty song or two thrown in for good measure.

Secured a 2xCD copy of "Forget Yourself" today. An album that I've not yet heard.
Should have it in-hand later this week. Looking forward to it!

I personally rank that one in their Top 5 for material, bottom 5 for sonics. Not one clunker on the entire album, though. You should also pick up the companion Beside Yourself if you haven't already. And the "Song In Space" CD single is pretty cool, too.

I don't have either "Beside Yourself" nor the "Song in Space" single.
I'll look into rectifying that. Thanks for the tips, Louis.

Thanks for the nutshell review of "Forget Yourself, too!

I really like FY and the sonics have never bothered me. It's purposefully noisy, which I like much better than the overtly smooth After Everything. Turn it up!

I gave Remote Luxury a listen cuz that's what seemed to make a lot you guys fans. I didn't like it so much - a little too 80's for me.
I'm still willing to listen, though. What should I try out?

You'll get a bunch of different answers but try these if you haven't already:

    Starfish
    Priest=Aura
    Forget Yourself
    After Everything Now This
    Untitled #23

That's just the tip of the iceberg, but a nice sampler.

Picked up the first Jack Frost album this past weekend - most excellent, and fits in very nicely with the Church discography. Is the second as good?

Thanks to this long thread I own many great Church cds. Of course I'm still following through all the years your opinions here. Sometimes I'm seeing, however, some omissions in the discussions... :)

So I'm very suprised nobody is giving his opinion about the live 2cd 'Psychedelic Symphony'. How is the performance? How are the sonics?

It just came out, so probably most of us have not heard it yet.
