Thanks for that. Yeah I had Vhs,beta and laser disc. Amazing how surreal it is now to watch that and realize that the amazing quality we have now means nothing. The youth and the times then was what many of us want. It's like American Beauty when Lester laments about the past and having Nothing but being young and having your whole life ahead of you is the real joy and happiness. I was 22 years old when The Complete Beatles came out and even younger when that Tony Palmer documentary on music was broadcast on PBS. The Beatle part of it was always my favorite and was broadcast by itself many times from about 1979-81. All you need is Love is the documentary and "Mighty Good" I think is the Beatle section. I'm just a little down right now. John M.
I have one myself but I didn't get the box with it. That being said the Allen Williams and George Martin interviews really need a cleaning.
I'm a little fuzzy about the origins of THE COMPLEAT BEATLES. Was it first shown on HBO or PBS? Or was it a theatrical release first?
Malcolm McDowell also narrated another documentary on Rock and Roll and that tape I also have- beta- around 1985-86. Great documentary. I should try to set up my Sony sl-1000/ and 900 just to see if they are still functional. Must go to my attic. John...
I worked at Crazy Eddie's in NYC at that time and was privey to everything released on home video early. If memory serves it was on PBS first and then the tape/ laserdisc around 1982 to 1983. Geez....
Man oh man, if there was EVER a documentary SCREAMING for an extended cut. Imagine a DVD of this with unedited interviews?
To me, this is the ultimate, perfect example of when fans can put together a well thought out, concise, intelligent, educational documentary without coming across as "fan driven". A true labour of love. Make that a true labour of love of the loved.
When I was researching to see if there was an open thread for this I came across someone that said that this was supposed to be a few minute ad for the Complete Beatles sheet musics book and it was four hours unedited.
OK, according to Wiki, it was first released as a PBS special, then it went to home video. I thought I remembered an HBO run, but could be mistaken.
Those are being sold on eBay. What's confusing is that I have never seen that book and the books i've seen underneath that name are sheet music
I'm not sure if it ran on HBO, but I remember TBS running it pretty often, usually in overnight slots, in the late 80s and early 90s.
in reality there is no way we will get this on BD...we can hope like I hope for The Capitol Versions Volume 3 on CD! FAT CHANCE! ; )
Sure it was on HBO don't you remember trying to put the channel selector in the right place so you could watch it?
