I read many years ago that someone had kept Elvis's hair trimmings from when he had his haircut before entering the Army. Both weird and fascinating, like the lock of Beethoven's hair that someone kept.

 

A cryogenically preserved bacon, peanut butter and banana sandwich that Elvis took one bite out of and inexplicably never finished.

There is just too much to love.
As many jokes as people like to crack about Elvis, it is a wonderful legacy of music. Anyone who turns away for fashionable joke reasons, is cutting off their nose to spite their face in my opinion.

Seriously, deduct the 20 or so CDs of the movie soundtrack dreck included in the above set and it might approach something of "inspiration, pain and genius".

 

I've got a ton of stuff but nothing particularly rare... so I'm going with my TCB bottle opener. It's shiny and it helps me drink beer - in a flash!

Plenty of good stuff on the soundtracks, but they are soundtracks. South Pacific's soundtrack was huge, but I would suggest that not every song is a winner

A friend and I started collecting Sun Records, any we could get, in 1970. I bought Elvis’ Mystery Train for $25 then. That was the going price at the time, with That’s All Right being $100. It took me decades to get the rest of the Elvis 45s, mostly from collectors, including my friend as he traded up. About 6 years ago, I found Mystery Train on a 78 in a local antique shop for $2.00! That started the second set. They are scarce, not necessarily rare.

My favorite of the 5? It was, for a very long time, Baby Let’s Play House. I STILL love it. And as important a record that That’s All Right is - and it IS - (director David Lynch was quoted as saying the night that was recorded the earth moved), I am crazy about Mystery Train. It’s where Elvis was totally, joyously free, breaking away from any musical bonds.

In the meantime, my old friend will be getting the last of a complete Sun Records run, every one, some time this year.

I’m not really an expert, but Milkcow Blues Boogie is quite hard to get, the rarest of the Suns. As for the RCA 45s, I think the two disc and three disc EP sets of Elvis Presley, which included the songs off his first album, are quite rare. I only have the single disc EP.

Personally, my favorite Elvis records are from 1956. Hate to admit it, but I was witness to the bomb dropped that was Elvis. Unless one lived it, you would not believe what a musical and culture change he brought about. Many mention Heartbreak Hotel as the explosion. For me it was Hound Dog. Great two-sider. Also love MyBaby Left Me. Those.

 

Oddly, I just had a conversation with someone about this last night. I had a similar experience when I went in 2007, and I’m not really much of a fan.

I think the most interesting thing in my collection is the Record Store Day reissue of “That’s Alright, Mama.” And the thing I probably listen to the most is the “Suspicious Minds” single that I got for a quarter.
