Want to, but can't. The Cure has been absolute crap CD mastering since 1997.

Mixed Up was my gateway drug too. Faith and Disintegration are now my favourite Cure albums but I still love Mixed Up from front to back.

Agreed that these remixes are minor variants to the original mixes. I came to the Cure through Mixed Up and love their approach to remixes from LGTB through Wish.

I would love, however, for the complete story to be told here. When I was buying Cure singles in the early 90s, most of them cost around $10. The early singles, however, (BDC through Hanging Garden) were far more expensive. I was so excited to hear the extended mix of Inbetween Days when I found that single... then was so sad to find it’s only in the promo single. I had to resort to tape trading to get this mix, Primary, and the real extended mix of Pictures if You. I still have not seen the Primary 12” for under $30. Wish they had closed the loop on this one.

It would have been nice to get the complete collection of rare remixes. The Inbetween Days extended version is available on the commercial 12" singles in Canada and US so it should be easier to find than the Primary 12" at least.

Not that this is what you are likely wanting, but I'm a but surprised there was never a complete Cure iTunes package like other artists have had (U2, DM) to at least make these available digitally.

Cure cd singles boxes like DM had would have been welcome too.

That would of been something Jeff. Quite surprised they never got the box treatment at the time other band catalogs were being done.

I thought Bloodflowers sounded fine. It's Self Titled and Especially 4:13 Dream that are brickwalled to the max.

Yeah, it's pretty obvious this is not going to be the ultimate sounding copies of these tracks. Maybe it's just that we've waiting so long for these Disc 2 cuts to be collected. And where are the post-1990 mixes? The WMS ones were **** but the Wish era 12''s are as vital as anything that came before it. What's needed is a four disc set companion to Join The Dots. You can fit All of the cure's 12'' mixes on three CDs and then use the 4th for Torn Down.

I don't know... I might jump in on this. I don't think I still have my original Mixed Up CD and that second disc would be great.

I hope that the equalizing and mastering is done carefully, a dynamic range not under the 10 would be excellent.

    More is always good.

A dynamic range of-5-6-7 is bad, my ears don't want that :D

i love the original, and even got a cheesy razormaid record with a mix that was a cut and paste of it.

i wish there was a real longer version of the original. the new mix is much more subdued.

A Forest (featuring Earl Slick) - Mark Plati mix - unreleased 2001

I really like this version, as its a more drum and bass mix of it. Robert smith does like this song, and has done more techno mixes with Blank and Jones,
and several other remixers, to update it, and make it sound more modern.

    from 2003:
Blank & Jones Feat. Robert Smith - A Forest

The original is a classic though.

one of the most boring mixes out of them all, basically dropped a hip hop beat that everyone was using over the song, very uninspiring and lazy. also, the uk extended version was 8 minutes, while the regular one was 6:45 (cd, and vinyl).

overall, i do prefer the extended mixes compared to the album ones, but i do like the experimentation at times with the other tracks.

What I like about the Dub Mix is it is so Stark, nearly empty - whereas the original is a CinemaScope, super lush arrangement. The nakedness of the track lays the lyric bare, bleeding heart on the kitchen sink. But, to each their own. The original IS a masterpiece though.

I just listened to the new mix of "Want" again. I cannot figure out what he was aiming for. The vocals are completely out of time with the music, and what the **** is happening during the "drink more dreams more bed more drugs..." part?

I agree. The only version of want that is better than the original is when they play it live.

The extended mixes on Mixed Up from the singles for Disintegration are so good (with the exception of Pictures of You) that it makes you wonder about an alternate tracklist for that album. I imagine a record with fewer but longer songs, something like this:

    1- Plainsong
    2- Pictures of You
    3- Lullaby (extended mix)
    4- Lovesong (extended mix)
    5- Fascination Street (extended mix)
6- The Same Deep Water As You
    7- Disintegration
    8- Untitled

That roughly clocks around an hour.

*thumbsup* I've done the exact compilation, but with "Fear Of Ghosts" inbetween tracks 5 and 6.

Extended Mix of "Fascination Street" destroys the album one to my ears!

The whole of Disintegration is already a bit too extended for my liking. Half of it can be a tuneless borefest if I'm not in the mood. It was the first Cure album to bore me in places but they got worse sadly.

Robert Smith a genius and there are plenty of short pop oriented songs and albums in the back catalog that sit comfortably next to the moodier, longer intros and outro type songs and albums. One of the reasons The Cure have such a large and varied fanbase.

Many of us strongly disagree with your opinion about that album btw.

Oh I know, for some reason it is deemed the best Cure album and by some margin. I remember getting it on cassette when it was released, I think I was 16 at the time and I hated it. It was nothing like as good as previous albums and although my feelings for the album have grown stronger over the years I still fail to see why this album is so revered. It's the band's commercial not creative high point IMO and I prefer the darker, moodier stuff from their catalogue.

Pictures Of You and The Same Deep Water As You are fabulous, Love Song is ok and a couple of others are decent enough but there are a few total borefest tracks on that album the likes of which had never been experienced before on a Cure LP. It was the first album where cracks were appearing in Bob's songwriting. The following effort, Wish, was again patchy and Wild Mood Swings was wretched. For me Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, Pornography, Faith and Seventeen Seconds are all comfortably better than Disintegration. Just to say, I'm not slagging Disintegration off here, it's a good album but it's not their best by any means. I take issue with it being their best and nothing more.:tiphat:

Me too. Includes the remix of WCIBY not on the CD... unless you had the French 5-cd box set. But my local store wanted $200 for that in the 90s, which was a lot more than I paid Columbia House for my cassette!

Mine is a bit different, because I like to follow Robert deep down into his dark twisted and brooding rabbithole sometimes, that's no place for uplifting. And the longer the better. :D

    1 - Plainsong
2 - Pictures Of You (extended remix - not the dub mix)
    3 - Lullaby (extended mix)
4 - Fascination Street (extended mix)
    5 - Fear Of Ghosts
6 - The Same Deep Water As You
    7 - Prayers For Rain
    8 - Disintegration
    9 - Untitled
