BTW, Dolly's grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher so she wrote "Daddy Was an Old Time Preacher Man," the Porter and Dolly duet classic, about her grandfather.
I bought the CD Jolene a couple of years ago for the title track, and have fallen in love with the rest of the album now. Any recommendations for other albums from that period that are similar in style? With slightly more of a folk feel to them, if possible.
It's a shame Dolly is so poorly represented on CD. Some of her 80's albums have either never been on the format, or are impossibly scarce.
I love her early story songs and her duets with Porter Wagoner. New Harvest,First Gathering is a landmark album in which she branched out into pop singer/songwriter territory, and 9 to 5 and Other Odd Jobs is a superb concept album.
I loved it when Dolly became more 'pop' with New Harvest... Some of those albums from the mid-70's to the late 80's are my favourites by her.
Some of her 80s albums were released as two-fers in the U.K a few years ago. I only have All I Can Do/New Harvest First Gathering from that series. Superb disc.
Me too. I bought them all. I really hoped they were going to continue with them but they stopped after Burlap & Satin/Real Love. I think all those two-fers are OOP now and not especially cheap if you can find them.
Yes, different anyway. I actually heard Olivia's version first and was surprised how simple Dolly's was by comparison.
They are quite hard to find and not cheap. Her catalog on cd is a mess. Here You Come Again has been oop for ages and most of her early to mid 70s albums have never been available on cd.
I have that as well and it sounds great. Too bad that the single version of Two Doors Down is used instead of the less common album version.
Yes, I didn't know about that until I read it on Wikipedia. They said later copies of the LP had the single mix, but it would have been nice if both versions could have been included on the CD. There's certainly space for it!
That version of Two Doors Down is on a 3-CD set entitled Legendary. May be an import. I'll look later.
I'm going to Dollywood in December. I'm quite intrigued by it. I'm sure it will be very touristy but curious to see how it celebrates Dolly as an artist. I agree that her albums on CD are a mess. So many albums OOP. A Complete Albums Collection would be amazing.
That's a rarity. As is the soundtrack to Rhinestone. And the CD Real Love. I have all those and also the CD for Here You Come Again. Not sure why they are so limited and rare. I think recently they have all been released digitally. Glad I was able to snatch up the CDs when I did.
