In August 1986 just before heading off to my freshman year at college, I bought my first CD player and three discs: "Days Of Future Passed" - The Moody Blues, "Surrealistic Pillow" - Jefferson Airplane, and "The Yes Album". These, along with the like-minded vinyl collection I brought with me to school, was somewhat at odds with what most of my fellow dorm-mates listened to, but it was all good. I immediately started to supplement that initial CD purchase - primarily more 60's offerings - with every spare dollar I could scrape together, and have never really stopped since then.
Somewhere along the line I replaced the Airplane and Yes discs, but I still have (and play) that original W. Germany Decca/Deram Moody Blues CD.

I'm fairly sure my first two was Doolittle and some Sonic Youth title, probably Sister.

Would have been 1989 and they were Pump by Aerosmith, Dr Feelgood by Motley Crue and Skid Row by Skid Row.

My parents had a Ferguson VCR, which I inhereted. A very reliable VCR that just needed a belt replacement. I eventually got rid if it when digital TV arrived as you had to watch the channel whilst it was being taped (it kind of defeats the purpose of a VCR). Hopefully, someone is still enjoying it.

March 1991. One out of three aint bad:
    REM - Out of Time
    New Model Army - Impurity
Inspiral Carpets - The Beast Inside

Out of Time is the jewel in REM's shining ouevre, staggeringly good album, even today. New Model Army and Inspiral Carpets were following up career-high albums that were full of hit singles and could only manage one decent song between them.

I had wanted a CD player for years and could finally afford the £100 for a Kenwood that would last me more than ten years.

Well, I was late to the CD game, 'cos I was basically skint during the late 80s and most of the 90s, but even if I hadn't have been I don't think I would have forked out £16 or whatever it was that they were back then.

As far I can remember the first three I ever got were:
    – This 1997 Mercury Prize sampler that was about £2 in Tower Records
    [IMG]
    – Aces and Kings: the Best of Go West that I got from a record fair for about £6, and
    – Lather by Frank Zappa that I treated myself to when I got some kind of a reward for something I did at work.

I got a few CD's as presents before I even had a CD player.
I think the first CD I bought after getting a CD player was BEATLES ANTHOLOGY II.

Bought in the spring of 1990 at the age of 12:

Fleetwood Mac - Behind The Mask
Gary Moore - Still Got The Blues
Paul McCartney - Flowers In The Dirt

Only the third one on that list is still in my collection, by the way.

I know I'm right on two of them, I think I'm right on the third:

    Peter Gabriel So
    The Dream Academy self-titled
The Moody Blues THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE

The first two I bought the day I bought the CD player. I know I got the Moody Blues disc shortly after getting it, and think it was the third. If it isn't, I can't recall what it was.
