The best version is the one Sergio Leone directed.
    The theatrical cut is unbeatable.

Cint's presence in OUTITW would have spoiled everything.
One of the things I like best about the film is his absence.

I haven't seen Once Upon a Time in the West. But I've watched The Good The Bad and The Ugly twice. It's my favorite western of all time.

Conversation between high-society looking Jill and the barkeep. who tried to gross her out:

What can I do for you, ma'am?

I would like some water, if it's no trouble.

    Water?
That word is poison around these parts ever since the days of the great flood.

    You mean you never wash?

    We sure do!

I'd like to use the same facilities you people do.

    You sure can.
Just happen to have a full tub at the back.
You're lucky. Only three people have used it this morning.

(Playfully) Used it one at a time, or all together?

GBU is still slightly generally underrated imo. OUATITW (which I watched a few weeks) is somewhat overrated. The plot isn't even clear until well into the movie (well, ok, that's Leone). "Cheyenne" makes no sense as a character, and seem to function as someone who can sort out plot inconsistencies by showing up as needed. Harmonica could have simply shot Frank earlier and been done with it. To the extent the film works is a credit to its marvelous score. While you have to give Leone some credit for having the intuition to hire Morricone in the first place, it also means the film doesn't organically have the emotional or narrative coherency it should have. It's an interesting and ambitious semi-success imo, but neither film is as good as 'Fistful of Dynamite'.

I voted for OUATITW because it's the one I saw first and have seen many times since. I love it.

I've only seen TGTBATU once... What I remember of it was pretty cool!

What you said, with a minor twist.

I too saw TGTBATU only once, and that was when it was released, and I remember absolutely nothing of it.
It was a Friday, and date night, so I don't even remember the first ten minutes because after that, we were making out non-stop, as initiated by her.
I'll never know if she may or may not have cared for the choice of the movie and was just using that as an excuse not to watch it or not, as she was not that one would describe as a shy sort (when out of the classroom, that is), I found out later.
The sad thing for the audience was, we were sitting in the center section of the theater, ten-fifteen rows from the front!

I'll have to give it another chance as soon as I can hunt down the theatrical release, which seems to be the version of choice.

Not by audiences, but the American critics did pan it on release.

That's lovely! :p Minor twist indeed. Are you two still an item? :hugs:

I hope to see it again too--but not exactly in the circumstances you outline (it would probably kill me).

I did lots better later on, but in High School, not so much as I could or should have, other than slightly more than what went on in the theater.
A bandmate of mine dated her briefly after I did and took it lots further than I did in High School.

I would never do anything like that again in direct view of the public, ever, even if I could.
I'm surprised those directly in back of our seats didn't kick them and make some kind of rude east coast remark(s)...hey, were tryin' to watch the movie hee-ahh!

    BTT, and OAATITW...

I thought Bronson was also perfect in the two closeup scenes, wherein the camera slowly pans in on his face in a real tight shot, for about twenty seconds each time.
He never comes even close to blinking or even having his eyes refocus, (which they sometimes do naturally), not even in the slightest.

My only one beef with Charlie, and probably to whoever else would have played that part in place of him (those darn actors!) would be he could have got the harmonica playing of those four notes a little more convincing than he did, especially since it was alleged that Leone had the pre-recorded soundtrack playing while filming certain scenes, as he did in OUATIA.

Other than that, he was perfectly cast.

  16. I think that OUATIW is the thematically and more emotionally complex film of the two and I love seeing Henry Fonda as the killer. It's perfect.

Just watched OUATITW for first time.

amazingly beautiful film, Leone’s shots, just wow. Some of best cinematography and framing I’ve ever seen.

It is a little slow, I broke it up into 3 viewings. But I found it very satisfying ultimately.

Bronson was AMAZING in it, Henry Fonda so good.

But def one of most beautifully shot films I have ever seen.
