Well, there was a lot of wilderness out there. Plus everything was thrown together at the last second in terms of the stage and rigging and stuff. Running to grab tarps for the rain and cutting rope or whatever to hold it down - Probably would have been pretty handy to have a decent knife at Woodstock.
Terrapin was my foot in the door in 1989. I was heavily into prog and a Deadhead friend suggested it. Turns out the GD were nothing like I imagined. I honestly didn't understand all the hype for a long time. I fell asleep at my first show. I thought the midi drums bit was a joke. It took me a while to hear all the different aspects of their music and was really pretty dumbfounded by the general perception of the band. The more I heard, the more I thought they were the poster child for The American Band.
Yes there were a few that compiled shows. I suppose its the single show picks that did not contain the entire show that I'm curious about.
Not too many of those, I think. Dicks 24 is only a partial show (3/23/74). There may be others. I remember Dicks 8 is only missing one song.
Here's a trivia question that occurred to me while listening to Giants '91. When was the first time Jerry switched "30 years" to "40 years" in "Ship of Fools"?
No, whole show circulates. At that time Dick needed the band's approval for his releases. Shortly after this, they let him pick what he wanted so they could have a faster release schedule to combat bootleg CDs.
I'll drink to that. There isn't even any other band who comes close! Take it from a dude who views american culture from the outside.
terrapin was prolly the first GD record that piqued my curiosity a buddy who loved it just because of the production spun it for me to show off his system. people come at music from all different directions, some are into the songs some into the improvisation some the ambiance. my wifes favorites are AMERICAN BEAUTY and WORKINGMANS doesnt like the jams me thats what i love and the drumz!
I know! I expected to get a lecture on how metal shows are a serious exercise in seriousness. JRAD is playing the Frost Amphitheater this weekend. Edit: I’m going. This is their last chance with me so hopefully they make good on it.
No but even if I could, I’m not ready for outdoor concerts!!! I’m already going to the Jersey boardwalk every weekend for a day as my wife says it’s her happy place - and I didn’t use enough sunblock last weekend and the other day my lovely lady coworkers said I looked like a stop sign!!! I sweat standing still. I like my concerts air conditioned!!!! People were working on me for Peach Festival and I just cannot get with it. My friends went and even the outdoors type said it was burning hot as blazes!!!!
@US Blues The Estimated Prophet From 5/10/78 is a special one, isn’t it? Do you find any discernible difference between April and May ‘78, Mr. ‘78 Guru?
To my ears the whole 5/10/78 is undervalued. I’m new to this 78 stuff (well about 2 years new) as compared to Mr. Blues but I’ll say when they re-assembled in May after a short 9-10 day break, they had become a bit more feisty and closer to the rails. I love 5/10 & 5/11/78 from Dick's 25 and 5/14/78 from 30 Trips is in some ways even more exciting. I’d love (and will) eventually hear the other 7 shows. Surely the powers that he will get to work on getting more from both April & May 1978 officially released.
I’m very excited for Saturday’s festivities. We’ll have a crew taking CalTrain down, should make for a good party First time I’ll be seeing them outdoors. I’ve seen them at least a dozen times now but only had tickets to one outdoor show, 4/29/17 Red Rocks. Snowed out! And we got a small arena show in Broomfield instead
