I listened to this yesterday and this morning after I finished Family Dog at the Great Highway (4/18/70), and have been enjoying the acoustic performances from RT 3.3 (5/14 and 5/15/70) today. Very enjoyable stuff, much of which is new to me. I'll need to circle back to Bear's Choice next -- I always forget about that album.
Nope. I didn’t see many small club shows when I was a kid. Saw the bigger acts at all the larger venues (Nassau, MSG, Meadowlands, Jones Beach).
The versions of I've Been All Around This World and Dark Hollow are among my favorite "strictly song" performances. It's a shame that a Vol. 2 never materialized (I suppose Family Dog more or less checks this box). I guess it was part of a contractual obligation to Warner Bros. so they did it and got out.
Two friendly suggestions: • Find the complete versions of 13 & 14 Feb 1970 on-line and listen to both acoustic sets in their entirety. • Find 20 September 1970- Fillmore East, that acoustic set is mind-blowing!
It would be easy to say 1974. But for variety I'll say the latter part of 1977 contains some strong versions of Truckin.
This jam/riff is one of those things that started off as a riff that Jerry would solo over, but then, in the late 80s, as Dahaben points out, he would just "quote" the melody of the riff and it sounded rather fey, IMO.
If anyone's interested, I just started one of my retrospective threads for Live/Dead. "Turn on your lovelight" - 50th anniversary of The Grateful Dead's LIVE/DEAD
Now listening to 11/11/73[Winterland SF] on TIGDH on SiriusXM's Grateful Dead channel via the webstream now playing Dark Star.
Certainly the Veneta version is more iconic and the backdrop of the sun going down and the last light of day slipping away is a brilliant juxtaposition to that performance, but there's a certain way that Jerry's squeezing the notes out of his axe on the solo that's particularly sweet on 3/24/73. Both are great.
Another friendly suggestion (To David Lemieux): Find 13 & 14 Feb 1970, and whatever’s in the vault from 11 Feb too, and release box set of the entire freakin’ run already, just like Owsley Foundation and ABB did. And f*** it, release that 20 September 1970 while you’re at it (If it’s in the vault too).
And I like the transition from Dark Star into SMBH better on 3/24/73. The vocals seem a little sweeter on 8/27/72, but the instrumental playing nicer on 3/24/73. Ultimately, though, it's just a matter of taste since both are killer.
Dick's Picks 20 cd 4. Listen on headphones while drifting off to sleep. 9/28/76 Playing In The Band ---> The Wheel---> Samson And Delilah---> Jam---> Comes A Time---> Drums---> Eyes Of The World---> Orange Tango Jam---> Dancing In The Streets---> Playing In The Band
