Speaking of Road Trips...is anyone else worried about Real Gone reissue series? It has been 6 months since vol3 no3. Anyone know anything?
Must be it! That explains it because, as tasty as that sounded, I tend to blow off the vault compilations/incomplete shows. I mean, not entirely. DiP2 is incomplete, and that’s one of the very best. But, in general, I tend to listen to complete shows. Clearly, this Wall of Sound RT is good stuff and worthy of a revisit. THANK YOU!!
Apparently not! @dsdu found it for me. The Wall of Sound RT release. I thought it had that mid-70s sound, with Keith on a Fender Rhodes, but searching setlist sites by song wasn’t turning it up. ”Spoonful Jam” wasn’t matching anywhere, and “Spoonful” proper, apparently, was never played by the band until 1981 (The Melkweg shows). Anyhow, mystery solved and now I know one thing I’ll be listening to today!
As others have noted, it’s really Dark Star (Which is always happening) out of Truckin’ before the first DS verse is sung. Love it. Wonderful show, and a great reminder of just how special Fall/Winter ‘73 is. I think it’s been a great year for DaP, but 32 is my favorite. Is 10/25/73 (Madison) complete in the vault? That’s one Latvala raved about but never released (There’s a cut in the otherwise majestic Dark Star, among a couple other cuts and missing songs on the circulating copies). Would love to see that one released. A mini-box of BOTH Madison shows that year would be even better!
Any Bay Area guys headed to TXR for the Jay Blakesberg event? Lebo and Friends, with Stu, are playing the bar after. Hints that perhaps there may be a special guest
Bird Song from 1972-09-15 perhaps surpasses all previous versions, and is better than the Spectrum...maybe even better than Veneta...
I've been listening to DaP 32 and the Jay Ashley BERTHA transfer of 3/24/73. The Dave's Pick is louder and has more separation; Jerry is all the way to the right, Bob on the left, Bill's drums are very front & center. On the BERTHA SBD, Jerry is in the center, the drums are more recessed, and I think it's actually a more pleasant, blended mix. Does anyone have a similar feeling about any other official releases--that one of the circulating boot versions is really superior?
I noticed that the Miller SBD of 3/24/73 seems to have two board mixes, one with Phil prominent and Jerry a bit restrained, and another used as a patch with less Phil and more Jerry. Not sure how that happened, or how the Dave's compares.
Speaking of which -- from yesterday's SF Chronicle: 10 photos of Jerry Garcia through the lens of rock photographer Jay Blakesberg
Spending some time with JGB at Eel River; at the moment selections from the 6/10/89 show. I don’t think I’ve revisited this set since playing it a few times when it first came out. It’s hitting the spot tonight.
11/5/77 Mississippi Half-Step Toodeloo just blasted out of my speakers. 256 AAC through a Meridian Explorer 2 sounds damn fine. Took my powered sub out of my setup this weekend. Just felt it was crowding the lower regions with energy that wasn’t needed in this listening space. I hear an improvement in low end dynamics.
Big of a fan of Phil (and Bootsy, and Ron Carter and many others) as I am, I am not a big fan of subwoofers for the same reason.
We seem to be in the minority, but I still prefer the '71 remix. Similar to Aoxomoxoa, I find that a lot of the original Anthem mix just sounds like "a bunch of crazy stuff going on to me. Like, they were trying to make their version of Revolver or something, but they didn't have the years of experience making six albums previously. The remixes sound more cohesive and I find them more listenable.
All that means is your sub is either low quality or not properly set up (which can indeed be a time consuming challenge in some cases)
1972-09-15 GSET is again very hot. China>Rider is one of the best of the year; like Veneta, we have here a good couple minutes of Garcia wailing out at the end of the transition; PiTB is here a top version, some aggressive Garcia and not just playing the usual things; Bird Song is one of the best versions, maybe tops Veneta even; most of the jamming is concentrated in the middle before the drum break, but there is a lot of it; and yet another great Other One with crazy Keith stuff. Another great show!
