Before you declare another show to be over- or underrated, please consult the collective wisdom of the group. I'd go on an ALL CAPS rave about this one, and in particular how Jerry finishes PITB after the last section of vocals. On top of which the capture of his guitar tone (Alligator), especially on the audience recording, is simply astonishing.
I would highlight the mesmerizing Dead magic space they get into coming out of Truckin', and a fantastic second half of PITB where they spend like ten minutes slowly swirling back into the re-entry. Not in these parts! Spellbinding PITB, superior AUD, as has been said before... If anything the other two Universal Ampitheatre shows tend to be forgotten next to this one.
No conversation can be complete without the brief end solo on Truckin' from 8/6/71. For whatever stupid and inexplicable reason (if all you've got is a crap recording, clean it up and release it! - my tape isn't bad), this moment of Jerry bringing the crowd to its feet was left off of DP 35. relisten.net/grateful-dead/1971/08/06?source=89244 See 5:25 to the end.
IMO that's not a valid reason. When things go over the top, we need 'em all. Fortunately, we have other avenues for this.
Check out the story by Terry Tolkin in the comments. Great story of how these are really nice, fun guys.
Just pre-ordered the next installment of GarciaLive (#14). Pre-orders come with a bonus disc while they last.
Look what I found. I was literally just thinking "I wonder what happened to all those ticket stubs I used to have stuffed into cassette cases?" not that long ago. This was the infamous "show that fit on one tape." (Hot show, though!) (Ticket stub is on the back.)
Universal Amphitheater (6/30-7/1) is one of my favorite Kidd Candelario mixes - where with headphones the full separation, spread, and placement of the instruments is on full display. These tapes are best sampled through the official taper's section examples.
Sonic anomalies aside, what's wrong most of all about the '71 Anthem remix is that (like the Aoxomoxoa remix) they've sucked all of the weirdness out of the album - trying to turn an acid-drenched/high-on-nitrous multi-locational trip into '71 Skullf*ck bar band Dead simply didn't work. The remixes are a fun listen once or twice, but the GOGD absolutely got both album mixes bang-on first time.
I like the original Aoxomoxoa so much better. Anthem, I really enjoy elements of both. If pressed, I'd probably go with the trippier original but there are some big moments I missed from the remix when I moved to cd, having been weaned on that one. Glad to have it again and have both options.
“So many roads to ease my soul...“ - Jerry Garcia, 7/9/95. The last one ever. R.I.P. man, we miss you.
Now you know I'm secretly Grateful Dave. Not really.. Stoked they're busting out another unreleased show tomorrow. I caught the last six on Summer 90 so have no vision of this one. Hoping the lightning I heard about comes through. So next week Alpine 89 right? Then Brent's last?
