Yeah, another one of the rescheduled shows—most of this January ‘79 run seems to be.

You were there! Nice! I agree it’s a good, not great, show.

What’s with the names Utica, Attica, Ithaca?

I think I remember getting this program on the way in?

Or was it when I bought my $7 ticket?

Yeah, not rare at all. Maybe it’s because it hadn’t been played since the previous July? It’s probably my favourite opener.

I'll quote the commenter here who describes the NFA as 20 minutes of pure bliss. One of my favorite Dead moments for sure.

Brady looks like a goat, and he smells like a goat. But no hall of fame for proven cheats.

Saw 18 in 1991. I really enjoyed the year…basically for the “maybe” of it all. Jer got into some good conversations with Bruce and that was the pay off. Good song selection year as well.

    Ohhh…and Space…Space was good too.

Maybe my reaction was just in comparison to that MSG '90 run. 9/25/91 isn't necessarily better or worse than a later Brent show, just with more overall keyboard noise going on! Bruce was definitely looking for active musical conversations. I will say that having to be a little more "on their toes" at MSG with the new guys being around seemed to be a good thing for the band.

It's also worth remembering that I never saw them live and react strictly to the recordings. I need to take in a lot more audience recordings, I think.

To be fair, it's only the music and his voice I dislike.

Depending on how much you trust Wikipedia:

Utica was included because Utica (in modern-day Tunisia) is a city of antiquity: several other New York cities had adopted classical Mediterranean city names earlier, such as Troy (1789) and Rome (1796), or would later, as with Syracuse (1847).

About the Oct '77 semi-hodgepodge of officially released tracks, here's what you get if you get the Road Trips 1.2, and its bonus disc (both reviewed), and the hidden/filler tracks from Dick's Picks 29, and sort them into chrono in-show order. If I have it right, they did release the entire second set (but not the encore) of 10/16, just split between RT and bonus disc.

    10/7/77
Iko Iko / The Wheel / Wharf Rat / Sugar Magnolia

    10/11/77
    H>S>F / Sunrise / Let It Grow / Dancing (DP29) / Dire Wolf (DP29) / Drums > NFA > Wharf Rat > Around & Around (DP29)

    10/14/77
MS Half-Step / El Paso / Loser / Playing / Playing reprise > Brokedown (encore)

    10/16/77
    Sugaree / TMNS / Scarlet > Fire / Estimated > Drums > Other One > Good Lovin' / Terrapin > Black Peter / Around & Around

Don't hold me to those segues. All in all, not a bad snapshot (well, ripped up and Scotch-taped together) of a week in the life. Good on them for avoiding repeats. I do like the sound of the band here better than DeKalb; somebody said that's really more like a November gig and I agree based on Jerry's guitar tone if nothing else.

Most days, I don't learn a new word -- love this. I mean, what's not to like? "a workaround or quick-and-dirty solution that is clumsy, inelegant, inefficient, difficult to extend and hard to maintain."
