jo stafford the amazingest thing is her performances as darlene edwards, sung purposefully off-key, which might be more difficult than pitch perfect. I Love Paris · Jonathan and Darlene Edwards

I am not expert on female singers, I just know what I like. Sandy´s 1985 5-Lp box set, Who Know Where The Time Goes, was the first box set I ever bought, age 20; I barely knew her from discovering Fairport Convention the year before. In the decades since, She has become a beloved friend and musical companion; me picking up everything I could find up through the 19 Cd, Sandy Denny, set about 10 years ago. Over those decades her voice has come to mean so much to me. As I have grown old, each passing year, her songs and lyrics and voice have resonated deeper and deeper within my soul or consciousnesses working like a healing salve for troubled times. And now, I can put on any Sandy Lp: Solo, Fairport, Fotheringay, etc and be instantly transported and calmed down from the weight of this world. She has a magical power with that voice of her´s. This is why, for me, she is the most powerful vocalist of all time... Others may be more powerful, or more subtle, or more technical or emotive, but her voice just ¨Takes Me Away¨ every time. For me, nowadays, this is priceless. Thank you Sandy! (Such a tragic loss at such a young age.) Played this lovely record just yesterday, many many moons since out last visit: My favorite Sandy Denny Lp, her first solo Lp, from September 1971. Time on clock excact time I was born...
The thread is about pure vocal ability, so a vast number of the suggestions must fall. They may be wonderful artists but they are limited vocally. Out goes Stevie Nicks, Sandy Denny, Judy Garland, Sade and many more. Whitney had an awesome range and technique, Aretha and Linda stay imo. Likewise Maria!!
We’re going in terms of technique, so I doubt it’s your favorite werstern pop singer. It’s probably someone with years of study and practice combined with natural ability and since there’s close to 2 billion people in China and India, odds are that she comes from one of those two countries.
Karen, of course. Then there's Carly, with a pitch perfect live version of "That's the way I always heard it should be"...
