Curious where The Penthouse was, I looked it up and it was apparently demolished in 1968 and is now a parking lot.

Here is the hotel it was on the ground floor of (left of center) back in 1916:

  9. "This piece was written and performed to celebrate the centenary of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, an important event in Civil Rights history; its message and music is timeless."

    * Not all "Jazz", but there more than enough of it on this disc to justify inclusion in this thread....

*I have a scattering of Dizzy Gillespie on Verve but am missing out on many crucial recordings. As things stand this (budget) release fills a high percentage of those missing gems and is a damn near perfect purchase for me. The selections and sequencing all deserve special mention too.

(LP Steeplechase Records SCS-1161) 1981 .... recorded June 15th 1976 .... in this stripped down setting Dexter Gordon`s is truly on fire (no lackluster succession of quotes etc) + both bass master Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (he was outerwordly good at that time ....) and pin point drummer Alex Riel supply fine-meshed rhythm patterns .... bought this one as new release and the excitement still lingers on .... the CD edition SteepleChase SCCD 31156 adds a excellent bonus title .... warmly recommended ....
