Tadd Dameron & His Orchestra - The Magic Touch. Dameron is understandably revered as a composer and arranger, but he was a stellar performer in his own right. Here he's backed by a veritable who's-who of mid-century jazz: Johnny Griffin, Bill Evans, Ron Carter , Clark Terry, Charlie Shavers and George Duvivier, to name just a few.
Haven't listened to any jazz for a while, this caught my eye, Wow...it's led me on a musical journey which has filled my daily commutes. Thanks for that. This was excellent too.
Coleman Hawkins encounters Ben Webster (Verve) CD Coleman Hawkins / Ben Webster (tenor sax), Oscar Peterson (piano), Herb Ellis (guitar), Ray Brown (bass), Alvin Stoller (drums) Recorded 1957. CD edition includes Mono version and incomplete takes of Hawkins' Blues for Yolande. A rich and smooth sounding classic Verve album.
John Zorn - Elegy. I'm don't how to describe this one. I'm not sure it's jazz. Most people would question if it's even "music". But it's fascinating stuff, like almost everything Zorn does. "Blue" sounds like something Lalo Shifrin and Gyorgy Ligeti would come up with after an all-night bender.
Elvin Jones - Merry Go Round Blue Note (1971) TOCJ-8678 Blue Note Best & More 1100 Encore Series Drums – Elvin Jones Piano, Electric Piano – Chick Corea Piano, Electric Piano, Glockenspiel – Jan Hammer Guitar – Yoshiaki Masuo Flute – Joe Farrell Soprano Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone – David Liebman, Joe Farrell Tenor Saxophone – Steve Grossman Baritone Saxophone – Pepper Adams Alto Clarinet – Frank Foster Acoustic Bass, Electric Bass [Fender] – Gene Perla Congas – Don Alias
BILL HARRIS and FRIENDS (Fantasy Jazz/OJC) CD Bass – Red Mitchell Drums – Stan Levey Piano – Jimmy Rowles Tenor Saxophone – Ben Webster Trombone – Bill Harris Recorded 1957. CD was digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie in 1992 and issued in the Original Jazz Classics Collectors Choice series. "Bill Harris spent many years as one of the star soloists in the Woody Herman Orchestra. He hardly made any records under his own name, but this rare exception is a delight from start to finish. Saxophonist Ben Webster proves to be the superb foil for the leader, and the music is lush, humorous and passionate by turns" (from the sleeve notes).
ROLLIN' WITH LEO - Leo Parker (Blue Note) CD with Dave Burns (trumpet), Bill Swindell (tenor sax), Leo Parker (baritone sax), Johnny Acea (piano), Al Lucas / Stan Conover (bass), Wilbert Hogan / Purnell Rice (drums) Recorded 1961. CD remastered in 24 bit in 2008 by RVG. Top ranking Blue Note!
FYI, this is sister album that came from the session of the same day, like Bill Evans’ WFD and SATVV that were made at the same place.

CD Bass – Major Holley Guitar – Barry Galbraith / Howard Collins Claves / Percussion - Tommy Flanagan Percussion – Eddie Locke / Tommy Flanagan / Willie Rodriguez Tenor Saxophone – Coleman Hawkins Drums / Percussion - Eddie Locke Percussion - Willie Rodriguez Both albums have always appealed to me, especially Today And So, so finding it coupled with Desafinado on this 2-on-1 CD was a just ideal.
Now jamming Art Blakey "meet you at the jazz corner of the world vol 1". More fire! Not to be confused with "at the jazz corner of the world" which is a different Blakey album. Also the label says "meet me at the..." Whatever it's called this is a sweet live one. With (as they're introduced by the mc) "the soul brothers" : Jymie Merritt on bass Wayne Shorter tenor Lee Morgan on trumpet Bobby Timmons on piano
Miles Davis - Water Babies 1987 CBS/Sony Japan 32DP 727, the only way I know of to hear the original mix in digital A compilation of "leftovers" recorded 1967 - 1968. For a bunch of leftovers this is some real nice stuff. Was the 2nd great quintet ever not in great form?
Jackie McLean - Right Now! Blue Note (1965) TOCJ-4215 BN Works 4200 Series Alto Saxophone – Jackie McLean Piano – Larry Willis Bass – Bob Cranshaw Drums – Clifford Jarvis
The mastering engineer seems to be the guy who mastered LZ IV and Hotel California. BTW the Japanese letters read ‘Donnasyasu Dosatch’ - utterly nonsense.
