Bill Evans – Empathy + A Simple Matter Of Conviction Label:Verve Records – 837 757-2 Format:CD, Compilation, Remastered Bass – Eddie Gomez (tracks: 7 to 15), Monty Budwig (tracks: 1 to 6) Drums – Shelly Manne Engineer – Rudy Van Gelder Piano – Bill Evans Producer – Creed Taylor Empathy is from August of '62 while ASMoC is from October '66. Evans & Manne appear on both with Budwig the first bassist followed by Gomez. Empathy has become my favorite Evans since first hearing it earlier this year. Something about that Manne/Evans interplay works very well. Sound on this 2-fer CD is good too.
LUCKY IN PARIS - LUCKY THOMPSON (High Note) CD Bass – Gilbert Gassin Drums – Gérard Pochonet Percussion – Gana M'Bow Piano – Martial Solal Soprano Saxophone / Tenor Saxophone – Lucky Thompson Vibraphone – Michel Hausser 10 track CD. All tracks recorded 1959. CD sounds great with mastering credited to Malcolm Addey. I picked this excellent album up about 6 months back, and every time I hear it I am surprised by good it all sounds. This must rank as one of Lucky's finest albums. 4 of the 10 tracks included were first issued on a 7" Panorama / Symphonium EP

Extremely enjoyable album with some excellent playing. Red & Byrd play off of each other very well and Walton is always a highlight.
PAUL CHAMBERS SEXTET / WHIMS OF CHAMBERS / BLUE NOTE / 1956 / EARLY SECOND (1957) US MONO PRESSING BN 1534 LP This is (of course) no Lexington Avenue pressing, but a very beautiful and nicely playing 1957 second pressing with 47w 63rd NY 23 labels. On a related note, I remember the sound of the AP SACD to be slightly "grainy", as if the tapes hadn't aged too well. I read similar thoughts in a corresponding thread. The instrument separation seems less defined compared to other RVG recordings of this period, a slightly diffuse sound. This pressing seems to beat the SACD at least in this specific area. I have to make a direct comparison, though, as I haven't listened to the SACD for quite some time. I might just be "thrilled" by the fact this old pressing is sounding so clean.
thereof (CD Columbia Legacy Europe Press 88883 75664 2) 2013 .... recorded March 2nd + April 22nd, 1958 @ Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York City .... still remember resisting to buy this Miles Davis Mono Recordings set until my best buddy resolved my misery via a X-mas goodie surprise..... faultless music in wonderful sound ....
A great box set. Still, I like "Kind of Blue" best in stereo. I usually prefer mono for everything recorded before 1960, but the ambience, the reverb and the cymbals "bleeding" through from the right channel over to the left and Miles' clearly defined trumpet floating in the phantom center just make for a perfect soundstage in my book. Ah hell, this albums sounds majestic, mono or stereo.
Midweek Miles — Agharta . . . Recorded live at Osaka Festival Hall, Japan, February 1, 1975 1975/2015 Music On Vinyl – MOVLP134, Columbia – MOVLP134
Bill Evans / Jim Hall – Intermodulation Label: Verve Records – 833 771-2 Format: CD Evans/Hall duet recording which goes very well in the morning with coffee. Dog loves it as well. Recorded in '66 and SQ on this CD is good.
thereof (CD Atlantic Rhino Records 0081227946418) 2016 .... recorded May 25th, 1961 @ A&R Studios New York .... John Coltrane (ts, as) + Eric Dolphy (as, fl) + Freddie Hubbard (tp) + McCoy Tyner (p) + Reggie Workman (b) + Art Davis (b) + Elvin Jones (dr) .... there are recordings which always succeed making my heart sing and this album `s title certainly does .... excellent sounding mono transfer with the long hispanic tinged bass ladden intro sequence as unreserved delight ....
(CD Columbia Legacy Austrian Press 513357 2) 2003 .... recorded January 29th - March 9th , 1964 @ New York .... Charlie Rouse (ts) + Thelonious Monk (p) + Butch Warren (b) + Ben Riley (dr) .... released at a time when expanded Columbia Legacy releases seemed to be a regular jazz meal .... the music is obviously wonderful ....
Awesome that me & @Soulpope are rockin' the same album! NP: Thelonious Monk – It's Monk's Time Label: Columbia – CK 63532, Legacy – CK 63532 Format: CD, Album, Reissue Country: US Released: 2003 Genre: Jazz Style: Bop I love Monk's playing on the bonus track Epistrophy - which was not on the original album. Shuffle Boil is a nice little quirky number too.
I went on a mini Chick Corea jag last night. With most of the tracks from these albums And trio music live (see above )
(CD Columbia Legacy Europe Press CK-65513) 1998 .... recorded November 1959 .... Booker Ervin/Benny Golson (ts) + John Handy (as) + Jerome Richardson (bs) +Don Ellis/Richard Williams (tp) + Jimmy Knepper (tb) + Teddy Charles (vib) + Roland Hanna/Nico Bunink (p) + Charles Mingus (b) + Maurice Brown/Seymour Barab (cello) + Dannie Richmond (dr) .... sort of an overlooked album (at least compared to "Ah Um") but Charles Mingus was on a roll at that time, simply couldn`t go wrong and shines with his ingenious approach both as arranger/composer and musician ....
