Nick Brignola – Burn Brigade Label: Bee Hive Records – BH 7010 Baritone Saxophone – Cecil Payne, Nick Brignola, Ronnie Cuber Bass – Walter Booker Drums – Jimmy Cobb Piano – Walter Davis Jr. Listening to this via the Mosaic Bee Hive set. Baritones everywhere and it's lovely. Great, masterful playing here.
Not sure. The picture is supposed to be of the original album pressing on Bee Hive. If they played at the festival then it's likely they used the same photo.
Sal Nistico – Neo/Nistico Label: Bee Hive Records – BH 7006 Released: 1978 Baritone Saxophone – Nick Brignola Bass – Sam Jones Drums – Roy Haynes Piano – Ronnie Mathews Tenor Saxophone – Sal Nistico Trumpet – Ted Curson More from the Mosaic set. When Haynes is involved, good things happen. And the horn front line is good. I've liked Nistico for a while but this set has opened my ears to Brignola. He's as strong a bari player as I've heard.
A JAZZ PORTRAIT OF FRANK SINATRA BY THE OSCAR PETERSON TRIO (Verve) CD Oscar Peterson (piano), Ray Brown (bass), Ed Thigpen (drums) Recorded 1959. The only Frank Sinatra record I have is the one with Antonio Carlos Jobim so I didn't hold out much hope for this one but I have to say this album is a really enjoyable listen. The CD is included in the excellent value for money 5 CD album box set '5 Original Albums' box set which I highly recommend if you are missing out on any of the titles included. 5 ORIGINAL ALBUMS - OSCAR PETERSON (Verve) 5CD 5 great albums, all presented in mini cardboard replica original LP sleeves. There are no mastering credits but no worries on that front as each disc sounds spot on, and just as important, all the music on all the discs is well worth having.
Andrew Hill – Black Fire Label: Blue Note – UCCQ-9507 Series: Blue Note 80 More 60 Works – Format: CD, Album, Reissue, Remastered Country: Japan Released: 19 Jun 2019 Bass – Richard Davis (2) Drums – Roy Haynes Piano, Composed By – Andrew Hill Tenor Saxophone – Joe Henderson Recorded 11/8/63. More Roy Haynes, only this time from an earlier decade. He & Richard Davis are amazing here; of course Hill & Henderson provide some great playing as well.
A nice label with a great "Jazz Club Series - 20 Items" but long gone! The Fontana pressings give excellent playback sound - high quality pressings like all the Philips.
Beautiful record! I know I'm not the first to lament Brown's passing but realizing it happened in '56 is just heartbreaking. The waves he made even by that time were large enough to carry over decades, but had that tragedy never happened and he had been able to carry on longer...man, what a loss.
Yes that is all true. A similar Impact but not that great was the early loss of Bill Evans' bass player Scott LaFaro. Look at all the bass player after him how the bass became a very solo instrument and the Interplay between bass and piano for examble was born.
We Want MILES - MILES DAVIS (Columbia/Legacy) 2CD Bass – Marcus Miller Drums – Al Foster Guitar – Mike Stern Percussion – Mino Cinelu Soprano Sax – Bill Evans Trumpet – Miles Davis Recorded live at 3 different venues in 1981 and reissued on CD in cardboard gate-fold sleeve. The 2CD set has "Jam session type numbers which passed from Swing to Funk, and even Reggae. More convivial than usual Miles smiled at the audience." The Columbia Legacy 2CD edition includes 3 extra tracks ('Ursula', 'Aida' & 'Fat Time') that were previously issued on the Japanese import album Miles! Miles! Miles!
Onto Disc 2 from We Want MILES Carrying on from disc 1 with more exceptional (and most welcome) concert recordings.
Curtis Fuller – Fire And Filigree Label: Bee Hive Records – BH 7007 Bass – Sam Jones Drums – Freddie Waits Piano – Walter Bishop, Jr. Saxophone [Tenor] – Sal Nistico Trombone – Curtis Fuller Recorded 12/6/78 at Master Sound in NYC. Excellent all around. Fuller's tone is exceptional, and is showcased on Ballad for Gabe Wells.
Would like to recommend this compilation Columbia KC 32025 It contains Miles 1955 to Miles 1962. My favorite track is "On Green Dolphin Street" from May 26, 1958 with the famous group Miles Davis (tp) / John Coltrane (ts) / Bill Evans (p) / Paul Chambers (b) / Jimmy Cobb (dr)
DIMENSIONS & EXTENSIONS + SAM RIVERS (Blue Note) CD with Donald Byrd (trumpet), Julian Priester (trombone), James Spaulding (alto sax & flute), Sam Rivers (tenor & soprano sax, flute), Cecil McBee (bass), Steve Ellington (drums) Recorded 1967. Larry Young – Heaven On Earth Label: Blue Note – UCCQ-9517 Series: Blue Note 80 More 60 Works – Format: CD, Album, Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered Country: Japan Released: 19 Jun 2019 Alto Saxophone – Byard Lancaster Drums – Edward Gladden* Guitar – George Benson Organ – Larry Young Tenor Saxophone – Herbert Morgan Vocals – Althea Young (tracks: 6) Recorded Feb. 9, 1968. Hard to judge a Blue Note by the first song. The Infant and title track are is a groovers, as similar to other soul jazz tracks of the time. But after that there's some extended playing a bit outside the box. Don't have a lot of - if any - Herbert Morgan in my collection but he does very well here, as does Gladden on drums.
I just picked up a promo copy of it on vinyl today at my local record store. The song about the girl who gets her mouth spray pained is a very unsettling two minutes of music. I don't think that I've ever heard anything like this too often on other Herbie releases except maybe for his very early lps. It's a very good soundtrack album, but it's for special occasions. It makes me want to watch the movie again for the umpteenth time.
