The Left Bank of New York - Jimmy Gourley (Uptown) CD
    with
Jimmy Gourley (guitar), Marc Johnson (bass), Victor Lewis (drums), Ralph Moore (tenor sax), Don Sickler (trumpet)

Recorded 1986 by RVG at Van Gelder Studio. The CD has two tracks not included on the LP edition.

This was a great find in the 'bargains' a few years ago. It's a very satisfying, fresh sounding album and the band are in great form on every selection.

"Jimmy Gourley is an American Jazz guitarist who has lived in Paris for the last three and a half decades - a real American in Paris. He played a pivital role in the development of Jazz in Paris and all of Europe."

THE BRIGHT MISSISSIPPI - ALLEN TOUSSAINT (Nonesuch) CD

    Recorded 2008

Ever so often I take a fancy to listening to the Jazz inspired recordings of Allen Toussaint. This classy album is full of wonderfully cool & charming musical Mississippi vibes.

Very nice! I haven’t heard On Leaves of Grass (I own it and I believe it’s still sealed), but News For Lulu is great! :)

This 4 disc set from the always excellent Hip-o-select, is quite a document. Ella sings and swings so easy -- breezing through nearly every great song and standard you could imagine. But not repeating her sets at all over the twelve nights, making for some fascinating and untiring listening. I wonder what her motivation was, other than just pure love of singing great music. Probably just "hey, I'm going to be at the Crescendo for 12 nights -- record all of it and make an album of whatever you want. I'll give you TONS to choose from." Because back in '61 there's no way she thought they'd release all of it. But they totally could have. Thank goodness they have. It's all aces!

Weather Report - Weather Report (1971). Still the best WR album to me, a straight line from the Miles Davis IASW/BB combo. Wayne Shorter's status as Joe Zawinul's co-equal would fade over time, but on the debut he's front and center both as writer and player.
