Roscoe Mitchell and the Sound Ensemble - Snurdy McGurdy and her Dancin' Shoes (1981) Roscoe Mitchell (saxes, flutes), Hugh Ragin (trumpet, flugelhorn), A. Spencer Barefield (guitars, piano), Jaribu Shahid (bass, percussion), Tani Tabbal (drums, percussion). (Nessa Records)
Now playing: Ben Monder is one of the most unbelievable guitarists in the past 20 years with a conception on the guitar that I much prefer to his contemporaries like Kurt Rosenwinkel or Wolfgang Muthspiel. Excavation is a fine album and, for me, perhaps the best place to start exploring Monder’s solo work. Of course, Monder has been on hundreds of other musicians’ albums.
@Mirror Image Agreed a fine guitarist!! Coincidentally played Flux recently. I'll have to listen to Excavation later. NP: Henry Threadgill - Song Out Of My Trees (1993) Including Ted Daniel (trumpet, etc), Brandon Ross or Ed Cherry or James Emery (guitars), Jerome Richardson (bass guitar), Gene Lake or Reggie Nicholson (drums), Myra Melford (piano - track2) & others... (Black Saint, 1994)
He sure is! He’s also a very down-to-earth, nice guy. In the early 2000s, I kept up an email correspondence with him, but I lost touch after awhile. During this time, he sent me several recordings and, if this wasn’t gracious enough, he autographed them for me with a personal message. If was going to take guitar lessons from someone, he would be the one I’d want to learn from.
Thanks for sharing! Just finished listening to Excavation as well. NP: Myra Melford - Even the Sounds Shine (1994) Myra Melford (piano), Dave Douglas (trumpet), Marty Ehrlich (alto sax, clarinet), Lindsey Horner (bass), Reggie Nicholson (drums). (hat ART)
Playing Max Roach "the many sides of Max". Piano-less quintet w Julian Priester Art Davis George Coleman Booker Little Can't get a much better band than this. Max was always great at picking material and this record has tunes from Bill Lee and Richard Muhal Abrams

DRUMS UNLIMITED - MAX ROACH (Atlantic) CD with Max Roach (drums), James Spaulding & Roland Alexander (alto sax), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Ronnie Mathews (piano), Jymie Merritt (bass) Recorded 1965 & 1966. The EU Atlantic Jazz Masters CD edition was issued and remastered in the 2004 with 12 page booklet included. A great album that I almost missed out on due to foolishly thinking for a long time it was literally nothing but Drums Unlimited. I should have checked out the all the other recording details much earlier than I did!

DIZZY GILLESPIE LIVE AT RONNIE SCOTT'S VOLUME FOUR (CAP) CD with Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet & vocal), Mike Longo (piano), Al Gafa (guitar), Earl May (bass), Mikey Roker (drums) Recorded 1973. CD in gate-fold digipak. 12 page colour booklet included. Another terrific title in this excellent series. If you ever see any of the 4 volumes of Dizzy's and this band live at Ronnie Scott's I would recommend immediate purchase! I only have two of the four volumes in this wonderful series and am over the moon with both of them. It is such a shame all four volumes are now so difficult to find nowadays. If all 4 CDs were to be re-issued in a compact box set format that really would be something else.
Disc 4 from the budget box set featuring 5 Original Blue Note Albums from Jackie McLean. JACKNIFE - JACKIE McLEAN (Blue Note) CD Alto Saxophone – Jackie McLean Bass – Larry Ridley Drums – Jack DeJohnette Piano – Larry Willis Trumpet – Charles Tolliver / Lee Morgan Recorded 1965. CD sounds great and was mastered in 24 bit by Ron McMaster. It's a real pleasure listening again to Jackie 'Jacknife' McLean & band hitting all the heights on this superb Blue Note album.

AALY Trio/DKV Trio-All Or Nothing- 1999 LP. A cool concept. Two trio's, one of the AALY on the left(Mats Gustafsson-alto & tenor sax, Kjell Nordeson-drums, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten-bass) and DKV on the right(Hamid Drake-drums, Kent Kessler-bass, Ken Vandermark-Bb & bass clarinet, tenor sax), performing one Vandermark original, plus Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu". Highly recommended for the more adventurous listener.
