THE WAY AHEAD - ARCHIE SHEPP (Impulse!) CD with Archie Shepp (tenor sax), Jimmy Owens (trumpet), Grachan Moncur III (trombone), Walter Davis Jr. (piano), Ron Carter (bass), Beaver Harris / Roy Haynes (drums). Recorded 1968. This CD edition includes two lengthy extra tracks that were both also issued on Archie Shepp's 1969 album KWANZA. This is one of the very best of a number of seriously great albums Archie Shepp recorded for Impulse!
Here's the reason behind all the Archie Shepp discs I have been listening to this week... ARCHIE SHEPP 5 ORIGINAL ALBUMS (Impulse!) 5CD Box FOUR FOR TRANE * ON THIS NIGHT * FIRE MUSIC * MAMA TOO TIGHT * THE WAY AHEAD Even though I already had a copy of one of the discs - FOUR FOR TRANE this neat and compact budget priced box set really grabbed my attention - 5 great albums all in one go - and all for about the price of one CD! Each disc has it's own single mini replica LP cardboard sleeve. There is a narrow black band surround on the front of each sleeve. You don't get a booklet but there is ample recording information on the back of each individual cardboard sleeve. Sound on all discs is as excellent.
Ballads & Blues - MILT JACKSON (Atlantic) CD with Bass – Oscar Pettiford / Percy Heath Drums – Kenny Clarke / Lawrence Marable Guitar – Barney Kessel / Barry Galbraith / Skeeter Best Piano – John Lewis Tenor Saxophone – Lucky Thompson Vibraphone – Milt Jackson Recorded 1956. Mono CD version issued in 24-bit remaster via WEA/Atlantic's Jazz 1000 Best Collection. Nine tracks, three composed by Milt Jackson & one from John Lewis. The rest are Jazz standards. An album that just swings along easy in a very cool and classy manner.
Milt Jackson: Plenty, Plenty Soul (Atlantic) CD Alto Saxophone – Ronnie Peters Baritone Saxophone – Sahib Shihab Bass – Oscar Pettiford / Percy Heath Drums – Art Blakey / Connie Kay Piano – Horace Silver Tenor Saxophone – Frank Foster / Lucky Thompson Trombone – Jimmy Cleveland Trumpet – Joe Newman Vibraphone – Milt Jackson Recorded over two sessions in January 1957. Does it say which masterings were used for this set? Probably the Erick Labson's masterings from the 1990s which I don't like very much, I much prefer the masterings that were used for the 1991 Japanese impulse! MVCI series.
Paul Elmore is credited with mastering On This Night (1993). The other four are Eric Labson at MCA (1995, 1997 & two from 1998).

One of my favorite vocal groups: Two LP set MCA Coral MCA 2- 4171 [Reissue 1982] - Original on the Kapp Label
A Certain Smile A Certain Sadness - Astrud GILBERTO & Walter WANDERLEY (Verve|Originals) CD with Astrud Gilberto (vocal), Walter Wanderley (organ), Jose Marino (bass), Claudio Slon (drums), Bobby Rosengarden (percussion) Dated 1966. Produced by Creed Taylor. CD issued in gate-fold digipak with remastering by Kevin Reeves. Easy listening all the way with sweet vocals and cheesy organ. The playing time is just short of 30 minutes. The cover almost indicates the content.
GETZ AU GO GO - THE NEW STAN GETZ QUARTET featuring ASTRUD GILBERTO (Verve|Originals) CD Bass – Chuck Israels / Gene Cherico Drums – Hélcio Milito / Joe Hunt Guitar – Kenny Burrell Tenor Saxophone – Stan Getz Vibraphone [Vibes] – Gary Burton Vocals – Astrud Gilberto Recorded 1964. Produced by Creed Taylor. Verve Originals CD issued in triple gate-fold digipak and mastered by Ellen Fitton at Universal mastering. Additional updated recording dates (which differ from the LP sleeve) are that only 6 tracks were recorded at Cafe Au Go Go, Greenwich Village on May 22, 1964 & the other 4 tracks (numbers 1, 2, 3 & 8 on this CD) were recorded at Carnegie Hall on October 9, 1964. More easy listening, this time those sweet Astrud Gilberto vocals are accompanied by the cool sound of Stan Getz and the New Quartet.
DARK MAGUS - MILES DAVIS (Columbia/Legacy) 2CD Recorded live at Carnegie Hall March 1974. I was playing Disc 1 from this powerful 2 disc set not so long ago. Now I'm getting up with it (again) as I listen to Disc 2. What an extraordinary listening experience!
