(CD Jazzhaus SWR Arthaus Music 101 706) 2012 ..... recorded "live" June 22nd, 1964 @ Audimax Freiburg Germany .... Heinz Sauer (ts, ss) + Günter Kronberg (as) + Albert Mangelsdorff (tb ) + Günter Lenz (b) + Ralf Hübner (dr) .... this formidable pianoless all-German group led by world class trombone player Albert Mangelsdorff hat three excellent albums for CBS in the mid60`s and are here back on home soil - after returning from a highly successful tour abroad - on top of their game .... special mention goes to outstanding bassplayer Günter Lenz .... btw excellent audio quality courtesy of German Radio SWR .... definitely deserves wider recognition ....

We would have loved to keep going, but the logistics of this were too much. It was truly a labor of love, though.

I finally got a (new) copy of Mingus' Black Saint and the Sinner Lady from Superior Viaduct. I have wanted to try one of their vinyl reissues for a while. Wow. It is absolutely faithful to the original and then some. One of the hallmarks of Mingus' (and Teo Macero's) stereo work is the confusion of sounds panning between channels—which is sometimes lost when an album is remastered. The Superior Viaduct version is true to the original and now I can hear all sorts of detail I never heard before. This is by far the best $22 I have spent in 2019 thus far.

I wrote on some other threads about jazz SACDs and audiophile pressing CDs, which promted me to make a (selected) definitive CD list of Wes Montgomery, as I thought they are relatively clear. Here we go.

The Wes Montgomery Trio - Fantasy SACD
    So Much Guitar! - DCC
    Full House -DCC
Bags Meets Wes - DCC or VDJ
    Boss Guitar - VICJ
    Movie Wes - WG
    Smokin - WG
Going Out Of My Head - DCC
    California Dreaming - WG
    Tequila - WG
    A&M Trilogy - 30XB

(The Trio is one of a few Fantasy SACDs that still hold up today from the series. The others are Shaft and Out There.)

The Four Brothers....Together Again! - The Four Brothers (Vik|RCA Victor/Legacy) CD
    with
Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Herbie Steward (tenor sax), Serge Chaloff (baritone sax), Elliot Lawrence (piano), Burgher Jones (bass) & Don Lamond (drums).

Recorded 1957. CD re-issue prepared and produced by Daniel Baumgarten and released via Sony's Jazz Connoisseur series. The 8 page booklet included reprints all of the original Leonard Feather LP sleeve notes.

Great to know this real tasty, extra cool sounding 35 minute session is back in circulation and that Amazon UK are currently selling CD copies for £3.99.
