Nightfall (The CalArts Sessions) - Charlie Haden & John Taylor (Naim) CD Recorded 2003 & released by Naim Audio in 2004. All music played live with no editing.
(Blue Note King Record Japan "Blue Note Masterpiece Selection 150" GXK 8114) 1979 .... recorded April 1st, 1961 @ Van Gelder Studio Englewood Cliffs .... Grant Green (g) + Ben Tucker (b) + Dave Bailey (dr) .... as previously stated I`m not a dedicated jazz guitar follower, but his session has all the ingredients for a Blue Note classic and can well be accounted for one of Grant Green`s finest hours for the label ....both Ben Tucker + Dave Bailey provide spot on rhythm work .... beautiful King Record vinyl release ....
(CD Sunnyside SSC-1036D) 1989 .... recorded October 27th + 28th, 1988, at A & R Studios, New York .... Jerry Gonzalez (tp, perc) + Carter Jefferson (ts) + Larry Willis (p) + Andy Gonzalez (b) + Steve Berrios (dr,bata, timbales, claves) ..... while me being a sucker (also) for Monk the composer, this is one of the best Thelonious Monk homage recordings ..... ace trumpeter/percussionist Jerry Gonzalez assembled a tight band (aka the nucleus of his Fort Apache Band) which works the "Thelonious Monk Songbook" inside out .... another (rare) possibility to enjoy Carter Jefferson`s passionate solo work ..... and bass legend Andy Gonzalez ensures the music is bound to the Afro-Cuban "clave patterns" to the point .... probably not known by many, but this beauty comes highly recommended ....
Speaking of Shorty Rodgers-I found a copy of some of his work on Modern Sounds with his Giants...anyone hip to the Swedish Modern Jazz Sounds of-Ame Domnerus and his Group? very nice-on RCA Camden
(CD Uptown UPCD-27.34) 1993 .... recorded July 6th + 7th, 1988 @ Rudy Van Gelder Studio .... Charlie Rouse (ts) + Sahib Shihab (bs) + Claudio Roditi (tp) + Walter Davis Jr (p) + Santi Debriano (b) + Victor Lewis (dr) .... another beloved platter which made me better understand the stupendous arrangement skills of Don Sickler .... the cast is obviously top notch and the horns really shine throughout .... btw Santi Debriano + Victor Lewis deliver a delicate rhythm backbone .... beautiful music which comes highly recommended ....
