NP Mark Turner- “yam yam” Old favorite with the Y2K era dream team personnel! The rhythm section is Brad Meldau’s trio 1.0 w Jorge Rossy on drums. The Tenor playing leader is joined out front by his musical separated at birth soul twin on guitar, Kurt Rosenwinkel. A beautifully recorded album by the Criss Cross label featuring music that is sometimes lyrical, sometimes knotty and mostly both are once. Highlights are Yam Yam 1, Isloation, and Subtle Tragedy. Mention must be given to the band’s cover of Moment’s Notice- Since the song is so easy to tackle as written ( ) might as well play it in 5. No sweat for these guys, who dazzle throughout. The track seems to encapsulate much of what is great about straight ahead jazz at the turn of the century. Good tings!
I am currently playing music from the band Free the Robots. Its definitely a jazz derivation and rather nice music. The beauty of jazz is that it covers and spawned so many musical styles and genres.

IN PARIS FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE JAZZ | MAY,1949 - THE MILES DAVIS/TADD DAMERON QUINTET (Columbia CD) with Bass – Barney Spieler Drums – Kenny Clarke Piano – Tadd Dameron Tenor Saxophone – James Moody Trumpet – Miles Davis This historic radio broadcast was not issued on LP until 1977. The CD was re-issued in a cardboard gatefold sleeve, included two extra tracks - 'Lover Man' & 'The Squirrel' and was the first disc in the huge 52 CD Boxset Miles Davis | The Complete Columbia Album Collection Sound quality isn't great but I suppose that is to be expected.
HERE IS PHINEAS | THE PIANO ARTISTRY OF PHINEAS NEWBORN JR. (Atlantic CD) Bass – Oscar Pettiford Drums – Kenny Clarke Guitar – Calvin Newborn Piano – Phineas Newborn Jr. Recorded by RVG in 1956. 24-bit remastered CD made in Japan & issued by Atlantic via Warner Jazz 1000 Best Collection series.
Another underrated pianist, at least in my opinion. Unfortunately those Japanese Warner 1000 Best Collection dics sound too much "in your face" to my ears. I have the 1999 Koch HDCD reissue (my Naim CD player decodes HDCD), which sounds OK.
