BEST OF The Complete Live Performances on Savoy Charlie Parker (SAVOY JAZZ) CD Charlie Parker on alto saxophone in performance at the Royal Roost, New York City with Miles Davis / Kenny Dorham (trumpet), Tadd Dameron / Al Haig (piano), Lucky Thompson (tenor sax), Milt Jackson (vibes), Curly Russell / Tommy Potter (bass), Max Roach / Joe Harris (drums). Here's some good news for the weekend: a major jazz documentary is coming to the telly. Emmy-winning documentary series American Masters will be presenting the broadcast premiere of Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, a documentary on the life of jazz legend Miles Davis. The film was directed by acclaimed documentarian Stanley Nelson and will be premiering on February 25 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings) as well as the PBS Video app in honor of Black History Month. From what we've seen, it's bound to be a fascinating watch. Check out the trailer below and see for yourself! And in our latest episode of JAZZIZ Backstage Pass, we check in with Snarky Puppy bassist Michael League onsite at the GroundUP Music Festival, which took place over Valentine's Day weekend in Miami Beach. Also in this newsletter, we hear a previously unreleased bonus track from the movie Whiplash, catch up with jazz's funniest drummer Sammy Miller and unpack a vinyl reissue from Nina Simone! Happy listening, everyone. We'll see you next time!
