You know what? This may not be Mingus' most famous or most acclaimed, but I agree with him!

BEST OF The Complete Live Performances on Savoy Charlie Parker (SAVOY JAZZ) CD

Charlie Parker on alto saxophone in performance at the Royal Roost, New York City with Miles Davis / Kenny Dorham (trumpet), Tadd Dameron / Al Haig (piano), Lucky Thompson (tenor sax), Milt Jackson (vibes), Curly Russell / Tommy Potter (bass), Max Roach / Joe Harris (drums).

A 13 track selection recorded 1947 & 1948. Great performances as you would expect, but unfortunately the sound, although acceptable, lost some of it's original life/sparkle due to use of the Cedar noise reduction system. Disc is packaged in triple gatefold digipak and includes 20 page booklet.

Here's some good news for the weekend: a major jazz documentary is coming to the telly. Emmy-winning documentary series American Masters will be presenting the broadcast premiere of Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, a documentary on the life of jazz legend Miles Davis. The film was directed by acclaimed documentarian Stanley Nelson and will be premiering on February 25 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings) as well as the PBS Video app in honor of Black History Month. From what we've seen, it's bound to be a fascinating watch. Check out the trailer below and see for yourself!

And in our latest episode of JAZZIZ Backstage Pass, we check in with Snarky Puppy bassist Michael League onsite at the GroundUP Music Festival, which took place over Valentine's Day weekend in Miami Beach. Also in this newsletter, we hear a previously unreleased bonus track from the movie Whiplash, catch up with jazz's funniest drummer Sammy Miller and unpack a vinyl reissue from Nina Simone!

Happy listening, everyone. We'll see you next time!

Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool Airs on PBS Feb. 25

In this clip, watch Davis record tune after tune in order to fulfill his contractual obligations to Prestige Records and, in the process, record gems of jazz spontaneity.

BEGIN THE BEGUINE - NEW YORK TRIO (Venus) CD
    with
Bill Charlap (piano), Jay Leonheart (bass), Bill Stewart (drums)

Recorded 2005. CD issued by Kang & Music / Venus. Mixed and mastered by Venus 24 bit Hyper Magnum Sound: Shuji Kitamura & Tetsuo Hara.

Stunning sound and solid performances as the New York Trio cover a selection of Cole Porter numbers. The CD was also issued in Japan with different sleeve.

CHANGE OF SCENES - STAN GETZ & THE KENNY CLARKE-FRANCY BOLAND BIG BAND (Verve) CD

Recorded in Germany 1971. 2017 CD edition re-issued in cardboard gate-fold sleeve. The album was originally issued on CD as part of the Verve Elite series.

Probably best not to put this beside any other Stan Getz album and file it under Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland.
