GRANT GREEN FUNK IN FRANCE (Resonance/Ina) 2CD - issued 2018
aka - FROM PARIS TO ANTIBES [1969-1970]

This is a great sounding double album, mastered by Fran Gala and issued in attractive triple digipak with 48 page booklet included. It always manages to sound so fresh every time I hear it. Disc 1 was mainly recorded at la Maison de la radio in Paris 1969. Disc 2 was recorded live at the Antibes Jazz Festival, 1970.

Jazz is not usually associated with the hippie movement of the late 60's - but if one record could qualify as such an accompanying soundtrack, it would have to be "Forest Flower" by Charles Lloyd.

DAVE BRUBECK OCTET - (Fantasy/ OJC) CD 1991 remaster

    Alto Saxophone –

Wonderful compilation of the Octet's complete initial recordings (1946 and 1950). These are all remarkable recordings considering the time period and were originally issued on 7" Fantasy & 10" Fantasy LPs. The CD was remastered by Kirk Felton.

Happy birthday to jazz pianist and composer, Andrew Hill – born June 30, 1931. This morning, in celebration of the occasion, I'm spinning a trio of his recent Blue Note reissues . . .

First up, the controversial "warbly" Black Fire . . .

Blue Note Tone Poet Series – KPG&JH@CA

Recorded in 1963, but not released until 1966 – a unique session, featuring two bass players . . .

    1966/2020 Blue Note ‎– ST-84160
Blue Note 80 Vinyl Reissue Series – KPG@CA

Maybe saving the best for last, this one is just about as good as avant-garde jazz gets — an extraordinary masterpiece, Andrew Hill is backed by a stellar line-up of musicians on one of my all-time favourite Blue Note sessions . . .

Do you have a link for this. I can only find, via discogs, a 2005 Japan CD.

  14. The 2007 DSD edition (cat. number UCCO-5110) is not an easy edition to find - but it is out there!

    Brubeck / Desmond

Brubeck/Desmond The Dave Brubeck Quartet CD Album

According to Amazon UK the 2007 (where I got it from) it is a 'Limited Edition'

*Incidentally the two Jazz At The Blackhawk tracks included on this edition were recorded 1952 or 1953 but not issued by Fantasy until 1956.

Another excellent early album (1953) from the Quartet. Music and sound quality on this live recording is suberb and it's all a genuine delight from start to finish!

Alan Douglas produced a five lp series called Wildflowers...The New York Loft Jazz Sessions. The 7 evening sessions from which this series is based took place at the loft home of Sam Rivers. The music is so good I can only dream what the other 358 days of the year sounded like.

Features Sam Rivers, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, Ken McIntyre, Byard Lancaster, Sunny Murray, David Murray, Air (Henry Threadgill, Fred Hopkins, Steve McCall)...among others.

BRUBECK plays BRUBECK - DAVE BRUBECK (Columbia/Jazz Masterworks) CD
    - original compositions for solo piano -

Recorded by Dave Brubeck in his own home late at night after his family went to bed (mentioned in his liner notes). Original LP album released 1956.

A fine solo piano record that stands up to repeated hearings.
