Trend / Discovery DS-812 - Howard Roberts "Turning To Spring" - rec. 1979 - Engineer: Jonathan Porath - Producer: Albert Marx
I've got everything CD related to the Ken Burns Jazz Series. To be honest, most of my listening is done on the computer. IIRC they do though.
Getting a lot of pleasure recently revisiting all the albums in this wonderful boxset THE COMPLETE FONTANA ALBUMS (1961-1969) - TUBBY HAYES (Fontana) 13 CD boxset CD1: Tubbs (1961) CD2: Equation In Rhythm / Palladium Jazz Date CD3: Tubbs In N.Y. (1961) CD4: Return Visit! (1962) CD5: Late Spot At Scott's (1962) CD6: Down In The Village (1962) CD7: Tubbs' Tours (1964) + previously unreleased bonus material CD8 & CD9: 100% Proof (1967) + previously unreleased bonus disc CD10: Mexican Green (1967) previously unreleased bonus material CD11 & 12: Grits, Beans And Greens (Complete sessions) (1969) CD13: The Orchestra (1970) Attractively presented, each disc packaged in seperate inner and outer quality cardboard sleeves. The music is, as expected, top notch and the MQA remastering really brings out the best sound from the tapes. As a bonus there is also a 150 page booket covering in great detail Jazz in London in the 1960s - followed by an in-depth discography information on each track selection.
Most satisfying Jazz For Christmas title (and by a distance) for both musical selection and listenability goes to the highly recommnded ... Carla's Christmas Carols CARLA BLEY | STEVE SWALLOW (WATT) CD with THE PARTYKA BRASS QUINTET (WATT) CD Piano, Celesta [Celeste] – Carla Bley | Bass, Chimes – Steve Swallow with French Horn [Horn] – Christine Chapman | Trombone – Adrian Mears Trumpet, Flugelhorn & Glockenspiel – Tobias Weidinger & Axel Schlosser Tuba & Bass Trombone – Ed Partyka Tracks 1-10 were recorded December 8/9, 2008 and mixed and mastered at La Buissonne Studio, Pernes Les Fontaines. Tracks 11 and 12 were recorded live in Berlin at The Passionskirche on December 4, 2008. From Hell's Bells to Jingle Bells (including a beautiful version of Jesus Maria) this album is a little gem. I have had the pleasure of listening to it a lot over the past few week or so.
Koch Jazz 3-6908-2 - Metropole Orchestra - " Twilight"- (compilation 1998) - Engineer: Wim Van Den Berg feat. Bart Van Lier (tb)
It really is wonderful. That being said, I confess I am dreadfully annoyed that the outtakes did not show up as downloads. E.g. "remastered 2019" 100% Proof from the usual suspects (Amazon MP3, iTunes, Qobuz &c) does not have the second disc of outtakes. Grits Beans Greens in contrast does have all the outtakes.
NOT TWO, NOT ONE - PAUL BLEY | GARY PEACOCK | PAUL MOTIAN (ECM) CD Double Bass – Gary Peacock / Drums – Paul Motian / Piano – Paul Bley Recorded Avatar Studio, New York 1998. Issued in slipcase with booklet. Top ranking trio with an off beat, exquisite and intense recording that has a certain kind of moody vibe that is very appealing.
Looks like the CD set is about $22 on Amazon in the US, so it is not has painful here. There was an LP released for RSD, but that sells for about $100. That is why I took a chance on the CD set and it sounds great. It is mastered by Bernie Grundman.
WILLOW WEEP FOR ME - WES MONTGOMERY (Verve) CD 2017 re-issue with Wes Montgomery (guitar), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (double bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums) A 7 track album recorded June 1965. In October 1968 four tracks had brass and reeds overdubs added with arrangements conducted by Claus Ogerman. These four tracks are all included in this edition (which was issued in a gatefold cardboard sleeve). All 7 tracks were also issued (without any overdubs) on the great Smokin' At The Half Note Master Edition CD (albeit in a slightly different running order).
