John Coltrane – Lush Life [from his Fearless Leader box] (Prestige Records) — With Earl May, Art Taylor // Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Albert "Tootie" Heath
I like the sound of these boxes, but found that the session order of the tracks didn't make for great listening (especially discs 2, 5 & 6) -- so I set up an iTunes playlist with the tracks in album order. Much better! I understand why they went with session order, but it's frustrating when certain albums are spread across two or even three (The Last Trane) discs.
Franz Koglmann – Cantos I-IV (hat ART) — With 17-piece ensemble, players include Tony Coe, Guillermo Gregorio, Gerry Hemingway, Klaus Koch, Tom Varner, Roberto Ottaviano, Burkhard Stangl, etc.
Eric Dolphy – Last Date (Fontana) — With Misha Mengelberg, Jacques Schols, Han Bennink; live in Hilversum, Holland, June 2, 1964
This great album was recorded same night as "Misterioso" and released first. "Thelonious Monk Quartet- Thelonious In Action" (recorded live in New York, 1958) with Johnny Griffin, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, Roy Haynes. (OJC CD 1988)
New to me, and sounding much better than I had anticipated.... The Trio - Live From Chicago |Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown & Ed Thigpen (Verve)
That's one of several albums included in this 5 CD box. IIRC, it also included about 25 or 30 previously unreleased tracks as well. Well worth seeking out if you enjoy Oscar: http://www.allmusic.com/album/london-house-sessions-mw0000184405
"Kenny Drew - Undercurrent" (1961) with Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard, Sam Jones (bass), Louis Hayes (drums). (CD 2007)
Malachi Thompson & Africa Brass - Buddy Bolden's Rag { 100 Years Of Jazz} Trumpets: Malachi Thompson/ David Spencer/ Kenny Anderson/ Phillip Perkins; Trombones: Edwin Williams/ Bill McFarland/ Ray Riperton/ Steve Berry; Bass: Harrison Bankhead; Percussion: Dr. Cuz/ Richard Lawrence; Drums: Darryl Ervin; Guest soloists: Lester Bowie, Ari Brown, Zane Massey.
Here's a pretty bangin' Japanese avant album from drummer "Sabu" Toyozumi. It's a sort of tribute to the AACM.... consists of two massive Roscoe Mitchell tunes as well as one by Malachi Favors. I've never heard the bari saxophonist Ukaji Shoji before but he is SMOKIN'!!!! Yoshisaburoh Toyozumi – Sabu: Message To Chicago
